View Full Version : ps2 questions
Hi to all,
first sorry about my bad school english. I hope that some understand me and can help me.
I want to buy me a ps2 and I do not know which chip I should take to play with CD-Rs.
In my area I can get the magic 3 or a Black Viper FINAL Modchip(FINAL STEALTH-MODCHIP) but which one should I take ?
And my second question is : Is it possible to copy the DVD-Roms (the games) for the PS2 without a DVD Drive.
I use normaly CloneCd with a Cyberdrive Writer.
Thank you for your help.
best greatings to all
OK, Here are the answers:
1. I want to buy me a ps2 and I do not know which chip I should take to play with CD-Rs.
In my area I can get the magic 3 or a Black Viper FINAL Modchip(FINAL STEALTH-MODCHIP) but which one should I take ?
ANSWER: Well, through what I can tell you, I would go for a Magic 3 modchip between the two which you have listed but my personal favourite would be the Messiah 2. As I have never heard about the Black Viper FINAL Modchip (I can only guess that it is a clone? Just a word in passing - STAY CLEAR OF CLONE CHIPS, EVEN IF THEY ARE CHEAPER!) So, I would go for the Magic 3. Plus, this will save you time and money later on if you decide to upgrade to a DVD Re-writer or get games which have been burned to DVD-R. If you are certain that you will not be doing this then there are other much cheaper options. I personally wopuld NOT recommend this but you can get No-Solder chips which just clip into the system (just like the cards on your PC) but this will mean taking out the chip if you DO decide to upgrade in the future so THINK ABOUT IT CAREFULLY before purchasing but my firm favourites are the MESSIAH 2 or MAGIC 3. More information is available on these on the Sticky's at the top of the page and searching the forum.
2. Is it possible to copy the DVD-Roms (the games) for the PS2 without a DVD Drive.
ANSWER: Sadly the answer is NO it cannot be done, however a cheap DVD drive can be picked up at computer stores - they really aren't that expensive! If you are interested, here is why it cannot be done: 1. DVD's are read by Infra-Red light rays whereas DVD's are read by a dedicated laser. This means that the drive will not get any reflectivity from the disc which means no data, and 2. The laser diode and the tracks which the laser follows on the disc itself are much smaller than on CD's. As this is the case, the CD drive would not collect any data from the disc.
3. I use normaly CloneCd with a Cyberdrive Writer.
ANSWER: You have the correct software for the job (as far as CD burning is concerned). I am not sure about the rewriter as you don't give a model number but as long as it supports RAW-DAO-96 then you should be fine as this is what is needed for CloneCD to make a correct 1:1 Copy.
Hope this helps and keep us posted...
Hi LUFCfan
thank you for your reply.
I will have look around, maybe I will find someone who has the Messiah 2. (*Because I need someone who will fix it for me in the PS2 - I am not able to do such things*I can do other things better *g*)
Has the Messiah 2 chip the opinion to boot direct with the CD-r or does it need something else.
I think my Cyberdrive(16x12x40x) supports RAW-DAO-96 in the Helpfile of clone it is so written. (" I know: Do not belive everything what is written but it works until now. "*ggg*)
If I get a DVD-Drive is it then possible to make a copy from a DVD-rom (without a Dvd - Writer) ?
Thank you for your help !
Hi again,
You can get your Messiah 2 chip supplied and fitted by Charlie_ps2 or Dust2Dust and they come very highly recommended by their customers.
YES, the Messiah 2 DOES boot CD-R directly - infact the Messiah 2 direct boots EVERYTHING you put in it!!!:D That has to be worth the extra money in my opinion. Plus in relation to your other question, If you buy a DVD-ROM drive then you WILL be able to copy DVD's with your CD Rewriter but it will involve ripping them down to fit. Remember, A PS2 DVD can hold 4.7GB of data whereas a CD can only hold 700MB so if you are going to do this then you need to research a little on it. Most rip kits these days are very good but you do get the odd one which will just burn a coaster (A copy which will not work). However, with an educated guess you will be able to tell whether the kit will work or not after you have done a couple. You will be best off by getting a rip kit from a well know ripper, (someone like Kalisto) and these can be found a plenty over at the superlinux website. I will tell you how to get there: Go to www.ps2ownz.com then, from here go down the affiliates menu (Bottom left of the screen) and find Superlinux.
This means you should avoid coaster rips. Most kits are what as know as 'One Button' ripkits which basically means put an original in one end, read the disc, come back a few hours later and you have an image ready to be burned onto CD. Also, instead of missing out on films and cutscenes in games (which is a common problem with ripkits) people have now started to split games to multiple CD's so none of the game is missed. You just have to change the discs over at a certain point that's all. The only real problem with ripkits these days is the fact that they are extremely hard on the mechanics of the laser arm assembly and are thought to wear out the laser mechanics quicker. Anyway, that should answer your questions, if you need any more help, don't hesitate to ask...
Oh, and I've just come across this on the superlinux site, it may come in handy for you. If you can't find a rip kit for a game, make your own with this new tool from Gaidin. Anyway, i've put the link below so give it a try...
