there seems to have been a lot of threads about people running dvdr's on ps2's recently. they all seem to be with ps2 version 3 or 4. unfortunately this is a problem with ps2's less than version 5 but there is solutions.

obviously there are several possible problems:

1. Is the chip installed correctly
2. am i copying the dvd roms correctly.
3. is my laser reading the dvdr

a simple check to see if the laser will read the dvdr correctly is to get a dvd movie on dvdr and stick this in your ps2. ps2's don't need to be chipped to run movies on dvdr so you should be able to stick this in and boot it like a dvd video. If it runs then your prob is with your chip or boot method or copy method. If it won't read then the problem is with your laser.

if your laser is the problem then you have two options.

1. try recalibrating your laser. there are several websites that deal with this including this site on console section.
2. buy a new official sony replacement laser. These are different to version 3 and 4 lasers and should read dvdr no problem.

also try using good quality dvdr media. most people try and save money by buying cheap media which the version 3 and 4's won't touch. Try traxdata or dvdmaster. if your ps2 still won't read these then your laser needs attention.

if your laser is fine and reads dvdr movies then confirm using this site that you are backing up and booting correctly and finally check that your chip is fitted correctly, that there are no solder splashes or chip legs soldered together. best to use a microscope for this.

Final solution. Remove chip, check that your ps2 is still fully functional and send it to someone that can fit and test it correctly.
usually if you get the chip fitted by someone they'll also set up your laser to read dvdr.

hope this helps everyone with probs.........................

ps... a useful tip from JAY_83. If you have fitted a chip and then when you switch your ps2 on and the system configuration/browser option screen has a blob in the background rather than the usual swirly animation go to the clock setting option and set the time correctly. then the animation will kick back in.
