I backed up GTA Vice City (NTSC) onto Traxdata DVD. but sometimes i experience loading problems, and in the game i get the "Loading" box, or "cannot read disk"

i have a v4 ps2 (PAL), with a Messiah mod chip.

i have a funny feeling this might be my laser ****ing up, could anyone suggest anything else it might be.

and also, where i could buy a pre-modded uk console, from a company in the uk, that can deliver.

thanks in advance

Try cleaning the laser in your PS2 with a cleaning disc. (The ones with the little brushes on it) See if that will sort out your problem...

As far as a pre-modded PS2... Contact Charlie_PS2 or Dust2Dust... They can set you up with a pre-modded PS2 with the Messiah 2 mod chip at a good price...

Does your cleaning disc have the little brushes on the bottom of it? If so, yes, go ahead and use it... Also, I forgot to ask, what program did you use to create the backup?

GTA:VC is sort of common so it might not be the game itself..
Try the other games and see what happens.
There are people out there having problems with this game..
I admit that it's possibility of laser or perhaps the Media he's using could be the cause so anything is possible..
On my Ver.4 Messiah 1 machine I still get "Loading Game"Message maybe 1 out of 30 games but other than that it's fine..While on my Ver.5 M2Pro machine got a single problem..
So who knows..

Had probs with this too. Copied it onto a Verbatim and in game a box comes up with read error. Copied it again onto a Bulkpaq G4 2X and it works fine no probs??? If you've modded a version 4 to be quite honest you are also better off getting a new laser for it. A friend of mine had a lot of trouble reading dvdr on his version 4 until he changed laser and now it works fine no problem.

i used a lens cleaning disk, a scotch one none the less, with four little brushes.

the problem still happens however, with the game often hanging. i tried "LMA Manager 2002" and this game also hangs.

however, cd-r media works fine, and original dvd's work fine.

so...what do? new laser, or new ps2?

You could try recalibrating your laser. Version 4's are set not to read dvdr and the cd laser power and dvd laser power are set separately so your ps2 could read cdr no probs but still have probs reading dvdr.

If you are considering buying a new ps2 then it's definitely worth a try. How to do it is on the console section of megagames or go to google and search ther and there are very good sites.

I've done this twice for mates and have had ps2's reading the cheapest dvdr's no problems.

It could be another problem( badly fitted chip/ copy method/ Boot method) so a goooood test to see if it's the laser is to get a dvdr movie a put that in. You dont need a modded playstation2 to play a dvdr movie. See if it plays okay. if it doesn't then your laser needs attention. If it does then your prob is in another area..

Good Luck

if it reads dvdr movies then it ain't your laser.

I just got a new PS2 for Xmas. BTW, I'm new here!

It was a lemon. It loaded Smuggler's Run (CDROM?) but did not successfully load any DVD Games (GTA2 Vice City, GT3, RE Veronica).

But, it did play Lord of Rings DVD movie.

I exchanged it for a new unit, and it's working great.

Just wanted to let ya know.... Playing a Movie isn't a complete test of the laser werx.

If its a movie that has been copied to DVD-R and the PS2 plays the copied movie okay then it proves that the PS2 laser needs no adjustment to read DVD-R's, game or movie.

:D

If the chip was fitted by a professional, why don't you get in contact with him and ask for advice as they should have checked whether your ps2 would play all format back-ups after they modded it.............

The reason why so many people have problems with vice city and gta 3 (on dvdr) is because it streams the data constantly. Very few games are this intense as the gta's are constantly loading data into ram.

Stand still then place your ear near your ps2, then just turn around and hear how hard the laser unit is working.

Dvd movies(also on dvdr) do stream but work on one path. They don't have to constantly search the disk and recalibrate the laser each time as gta's do.

Hope this helps,
James

I'm not sure mate, I see you have a version 4.
I would try recal your laser as other members have suggested. If you can't do it yourself then get the person who modded your machine to do.

I've had a GT version 4 back because of gtavice city errors. Would work fine on my panasonic dvdr but not on the media he used(can't remember what is was sorry) Recal the laser and it worked fine.

Hope this helps
