My borther in law wants to get a modchip for his PS2. His model is the same as mine - 39001, version7 USA. I have the Magic2 installed. He wants me to find one for his. I dont want to get a magic2 or 3 cause i really dont feel like ripping a PS2 apart and spend hours and hours soldering wires. So is the PS2 boot disc and no solder chip work OK to play PS2 cd-rom and DVD-rom games? I know you have swap.
If you dont want to worry about soldering then yes a no solder mod is your best choice.

The Magic2 works great, no problems except trying to play DVD movies - it skips. But i have a regular DVD player so it doesnt matter. I would like my brother in law to have a Magic2/3 installed but i would end up solder all those wires and it aint fun especially if i screwed it up. So i will tell him to get the swap disc with a no swap chip. .....UNless he wants to pay me big $$$$:D
If he wants you to install it but your worried about messing it up tell him that and have him send it to Bill at freedomlives.com (www.freedomlives.com). He does a great job. If you have been reading the forums lately people have been complaining about their magic 3s not working properly. Magic 2 is outdated and you run across a lot of clones. If he doesn't want to spend $68 on a Messiah 2 then recommend an Apple chip. They run for $40 at www.modchip-sbox.com. I bought mine from them. It has worked flawlessly for me. Or like you said get a no solder chip if he doesn't mind swapping.
