i think you can just rename the .pak to .zip and open it with winace ;)

you cannot rename *pak to *.zip
you can only open *.pk3 files (quake3) with Winzip.

but dragonunpacker is a good tool to look into files like *.pak
(Halflife, Quake2, Heretic...)
