What Do I Need To Get Started?

I'm new to PS2 backups. I realize I need a DVD burner (with DVDs) and a modchip. What do I have to do though? I haven't seen much discussion about this in the places I looked for this kind of info. Would it be possible to put a PS2 game on a standard CD, if it fit? :)
