Thought you might like to know of a little test I did today.
I bought in a batch of White Label 2x DVD-R (4th Generation) to backup a game.
When 1 burned at 1x on my Pioneer A03, fw 1.90, it took several minutes to load on a PAL v7 with Apple mod.
When I burned at 2x, zut alors, it booted straight away.
So I conclude that these need to be burned at 2x or else they overburn.
Dust - what's your comment?

Hi charlie,
I just picked up some Datasafe Generation 4 2X speed media today from a computer fair. However, i haven't burnt any PS2 games to them yet, do you think the problem you had might be the same with these.
Using Pioneer A04 Fw1.33, V4 Messiah Modded PS2

Absolutely no idea Hans. Thes DVD-Rs come in so many brands. The 2x palyed in the PAL v7 perfectly but won't play at all in the US v7. I'm now buirning 1x onto 1st generation Infiniti to see what happens.

Charlie - bought the same dvd-r's the other day and had same problem burning at 1x
will try burning at 2x perhaps tomorrow and let you know
as far as I am aware dust hasn't tested any of the whitelabel 2x yet.
I have had the same problem with higher priced media as well (TDK, Verbatim). My dvd-r backups seem to load and play better at 2x.

I burnt FFX to one of those Datasafe Generation 4 discs @ 2x took just over 40 minutes i think, is that about right? with no problems. It booted first go without any slow loading times, etc...
Dust, with the fw1.33 can't you burn certain disks @ 2x with that version of the firmware, as i thought the new Firmware versions like 1.33 allows you to burn at 2x if the disc supports it. So the Traxdata discs that you mention basically default back to 1x if you attempt to burn @2x with fw1.33. Why is that?

just an update
had some of the whitelabel 2x dvd-r lying around so I decided to try burning again.
the only difference this time round is that I had upgraded my A04 firmware to 1.33.
burned 1x booted np
burned 2x booted np
both on my v5 PAL, (will try v7 Magic2 at weekend)
got 2 discs left so will try backing up 2 other random games, then if all ok get some more. at 69p per disc not bad alternative to Traxdata.

I bought a pack of these white labeled TDK's and they didnt work at all. I have burned at 1x and 2x over 12 discs used and none worked well. 1 worked but would freeze. I would say to stay away from these. Unless maybe I had a bad batch but out of 100 dvd-r I used from top to middle to bottom and all gave about the same results.

I have just purchased a 104 firmware 1.32 and 50 whielabels.
Have been trying to backup a couple of games and have similar problems to Tyler. I could only get 2 discs to boot and they would take a couple of minutes to get the intro screen on Max Payne and when left on for 10 mins the game still hadnt started!!
PSX Paul - to recap did you have the same problem as me B4 you upgraded to f/w 1.33 and what is the difference between 1.32 and 1.33
Thanks Rob:confused:
Sorry guys,
can you explan to me what you mean by white label?
Is this unbranded or something?

an update on my whitelabel 2x media test:
The game I originally tested 1x & 2x booted with no problems. Tried another random game and both 1x & 2x and it failed to boot.
Took the game that booted with no problems on my v5 Messiah PAL to a v7 Magic2 PAL it failed to boot.
Conclusion - I will be sticking with my Traxdata media as I know it works :)

A pal of mine is a big gamer and has tried many brands of dvdr in different models that i have modded for him , he swears by traxdata they are purple topped if this helps :(
i have tried white label yellow tops and green tops
yellow tops fine 1+2 speed
green tops fine 1 speed but i had 4/5 failures at 2 speed
now using traxdata great discs no problems
