Does it require a rip kit or can you just do a normal backup with Primo? I read that some were using a rip kit and some 'play by play' sounds were missing. But when i bought the MAgic2 chip it said no patches were needed to play EA sports games.

Rip kit & patches are 2 different things....

If you have a dvd burner you dont need a rip kit.

You also don't need a patch.

Straight copy with Primo DVD following the tutorial written by Charlie_PS2....

We cant make a ripkit for Madden 2003 because it uses the same type of protection as in FFX (and most squaresoft games). They hide files so your PC cannot see them. Only Kalisto has figured this out and they wont give up their secret.

NBA Live has a ripkit out (I think) so you may be able to use that.

whats the purpose of the rip kit then ?

You have the Pioneer A04 don't you?
If so, don't even bother with a rip....

All the rip kit is for is to "HELP" you get the dvd based game small enough, so it will fit on a cd-r... It removes certain things from the game such as movies, dvd checks, etc.....

But if you have the A04, don't even bother...Just do a 1:1 burn with Primo on a dvd-r...

Here is a copy and paste from the text that is included in the rip kit TylerDurden mentioned...
It will give you a better idea of what it does...

No-Mod tutorial/kit by Kickson

Thanks and credit goes to:
- Zandal for the extractor/Rebuilder
- Sonix for his dvd scan file
- Bluebus for the .ccz file
- Prking for suggesting me to make a tutorial/kit
- Everyone who continues to support the PS2 ripping scene
"Through your knowledge, I have gained knowledge which will help me spread knowledge."

Note: For No-Mod Swap
1. Copy all contents from original NBA Live 2003 dvd to c:\live2k3.
2. Copy all contents from NBALive2003.zip to c:\live2k3.
3. To remove the dvdchecks, double click on dvdscan.exe. This will prompt you to enter a filename.
Type in: SLUS_205.36 and hit return. When the screen asks you if you want to patch the check, type
in y and enter. Dvdscan should find 2 dvd checks. That's it for dvd checks.
4. Now to reduce the size of the .mpc files, double click on movies.bat.
5. Now double click on Zandal's extractor/rebuilder tool. Ignore the working folder, you don’t need to
worry about it. Also leave the API function unchecked. For original folder, type in:
Audio\Speech\Arena and highlight Xarndat.idx.
Click extract it. You may get a message to overwrite LNN file. Click yes if this appears. When the
file is finished extracting, click OK, don't close Zandal's tool. Now double click on Xarndat.bat.
Go back to Zandal's tool and click rebuild it. Now delete the Xarndat folder that was created.
6. Now go back to Zandal's tool and change the output folder name to:
Audio\Speech\Gamespch\English and highlight Xspchdat.idx.
Click extract it. You may get a message to overwrite LNN file. Click yes if this appears. When the
file is finished extracting, click OK, don't close Zandal's tool. Now double click on Xspchdat.bat. Go
back to Zandal's tool and click rebuild it. Now delete the Xspchdat folder that was created.
7. Now go back to Zandal's tool and change the output folder name to:
Audio\Speech\Oneonone and highlight Xonedat.idx.
Click extract it. You may get a message to overwrite LNN file. Click yes if this appears. When the
file is finished extracting, click OK, don't close Zandal's tool. Now double click on Xonedat.bat. Go
back to Zandal's tool and click rebuild it. Now delete the Xonedat folder that was created.
8. Now go back to Zandal's tool and change the output folder name to:
Audio\Speech\Plyrcoch and highlight Xplcdat.idx.
Click extract it. You may get a message to overwrite LNN file. Click yes if this appears. When the
file is finished extracting, click OK, don't close Zandal's tool. Now double click on Xplcdat.bat. Go
back to Zandal's tool and click rebuild it. Now delete the Xplcdat folder that was created.
9. Close Zandal’s extractor/rebuilder.
10. Now click on nbalivefinal.bat. You're final .iso should be 628MB. Burn as usual using your favorite
cd burning software for dvd-rips.

I can't say I have fully tested this tutorial because I didn't have an original copy to test it with. Things to note before burning your copy:

a. Make sure the nbalive2k3.iso is 628MB. If it's not, then either you messed up or I messed up.
b. There are several different ways to make this rip. The changes would most likely be in how you decide
to downsize the audio or the movies. The .ccz file is included if you’d like to make a better rip.
c. Use cdrwin if possible. Set mode to cdrom-xa, mode2.
