I have a Version 5/6 Playstaions modded with an Auto DVD 3-wire V2.7 modchip and am using the Game Shark V2 Cd V1.99D. All PS2-CDR's that I have tested work fine (originals and backups), as well as all of my older PS1 games (originals and backups). The problem is ONLY with DVD-R Backups as the unit play DVD Movies and DVD Original Games fine. I have tried EVERY boot method conceivable (including a few newly invented ones by me) all to no avail. I have used DVD Originals with larger TOC's than the Backups, I have tried the posted boot methods and have even cleaned the laser a few times. No luck. I have read and re-read the forums and gone over the Modchips instructions all with no success. The DVD-R Backups I have made on a Pioneer A04 w/latest firmware and I have tried Pioneer DVD's as well as some OptoDisc with no luck. I backed these up using NERO 5.594, Alcohol (latest D/L) and CDRWIN 5.05d. Everything looks fine on the DVD's when I view the Backups from Win Explorer, but they won't work. The Auto 3-wire 2.7 DVD is SUPPOSED to work quite fine with DVD-R's, but there MUST be something I have overlooked. ANY SUGGESTIONS would be welcome.

Cheers,

-Markus

P.S. Yes, I have thought about the Magic 2 w/CLIP (supposedly only 6 solder connections. BUT, I only have 3 DVD games and am hoping to make this stupid Modchip work for now. Thanks again.

Try using Primo DVD to backup your dvd based games...
This is the program most everyone uses on the forum.
(At least if you back it up this way, we can be alomst certain
that you backup methods are not to blame.)
Also....Follow the tutorial written by Charlie_PS2 to the letter.
You can get the tutorial from here. Primo Tutorial (http://www.psxcopyworld.co.uk/Primo_Tutorial.htm)
Try using this to back them up and then we can go from there.
There have been people on this forum that have used NERO and could not get the backups to work. They switched to using Primo and the backups work fine.
Lets start with this..Then post back and we can go from there..

many older ps2 have to have the laser recalibrated to make them read dvdr

a good test is to pop a dvdr with a movie into the playstion
if it plays the movie then your laser is ok with that brand of dvdr

The suggestion to try a DVD Movie using the same DVD-R Media was a good one. I have done so and the DVD(-R) Movie works fine in the modded PS2. I will next try Primo DVD to see if it can make a better Backup, though I have a strong suspicion that this is also not the case (of a bad backup that is). I have a strange feeling that I may need GS2 V2 or above, while I have GS2 V1.99D.

I do not have PRIMO DVD, but instead have another product from Veritas: RecordNow MX (or something like that). I assumed it was useless for copies and so haven't installed it. I do have NERO 5.594, CDRWIN 5 and the Trial of Alcohol 120%. All 3 appear to copy DVD Discs. PSXCOPYWORLD.CO.UK is down (Bandwidth exceeded message). Is there anywhere else I can get PRIMO DVD to test to see if it's the DVD Software that is the weak link here?

Cheers,

-Markus.

If the website is not back up before I get home from work.... I will send it to you...Please give me your e-mail address and I will send Primo DVD & the PXEngine update to you....

Also... The Veritas Record NOW works PERFECTLY for PS2 backups...
Take CDRWin 5 and the other one (you can leave NERO) and throw them in the trash...... They are USELESS.....

RecordNow Max is an evolved version of Primo DVD. I have it and it works exactly like Primo, and works fine for me. TylerDurden also uses it with no problems.

I use it and love it. It works great. It is an evolved version of Primo so there is no need for downloading Prassi primo dvd. Just get the update if you have anything from Windows ME and under. If you have Windows 2000 or XP then there is no need to worry about anything.

Hi BG and thanks, I have received both the e-mails you have sent. I went ahead and tested a DVD-R Backup made with Primo and still the same: does not work. I honestly think I have found only one thing that MAY be a clue to this huge mystery: My Modchip instructions claim that a resistor should NOT be removed if one is using the GS2 1.71, 1.91, 1.93 and SHOULD be removed if GS 2.0X is used as a swap disc. Well my Modchip DOES have the resistor removed, though I don't have the GS2/V2.0 Disk. Mione is 1.99D. I really don't know if that is THE reason, but I don't have a GS2 V2 Game Disc. Any clues as to whether this could be the cause?

If that's what the mod chip instructions say, then stick with them... Go to a local video store and rent a copy of the gameshark v2..See if the backups will play then....
Cause I'm running out of ideas.....

Hi guys,

I spoke with the GameShark Guys just to ask if what the latest version was and the gentlemen offered to send me the latest version for free. Can you say Sweet! Anyways, don't know if that's gonna work but at least I can definitively say whether that was the correct solution or not. AND we can post it for any other poor souls that may run into the same problem.

P.S. Someone had suggested that the RecordNowMAX I have (which is distibruted by Vertitas, who also distributes PRIMODVD) is simply an upgraded version of PrimoDVD. The info I have received from Veritas suggests otherwise since both of these programs were acquired from 2 different companies and originated from different source code. Anyone with more updated information can maybe respond.

The way I beleive it happened was Prassi produced Primo DVD, then Vertitas purchased Prassi... So now they are the same people...
I don't think they meant is was a upgrade of Primo...I think they mean its just a newer program with some additional features that function the SAME as Primo DVD did....
Regardless....They both will produce a working backup, so I guess that's all that matters....:D
