I have recently modded my V4 PS2 with a no-solder chip. Immediately after I tested the machine to see if it would play legal DVDs and CDs. Which it did. I have now been using the swap method to boot DVD+Rs for about 4 days and they have worked perfectly so far. However, the PS2 now refuses to recognise all CDs - PSX, music and even legal PS2 CDs such as Pro Evolution. I've not even tested a CD-R game yet as I have been umable to boot the Swap Magic CD. As I said, initially I was able to boot Pro Evo but it refuses to now- gives a Disc Read Error after alot of whirring and clunking.

Anybody experienced this and/or have any ideas where to proceed with this?

Best Regards,
Andrew.

Sounds like some sort of laser problem....

Also.....First thing I would rec... is to junk the no-solder mod and the Swap Magic CD (which is really just a Gameshark knockoff) and get yourself a "Direct Boot" chip, such as the Messiah, Magic 2, or Apple....

The whirring and clunking you refer to: I would guess and say that it is disc spinning up and laser trying to focus on the disc....

Try cleaning the PS2 with a cd cleaning disc...The ones with the little brushes on it....See if that helps... If not, prepare to get another laser or another PS2...:(

Thanks for the advice. I have tried a cd cleaning kit and have on the off-chance removed the modchip to see if it had an affect. Both haven't helped at all unfortunately. Is the use of the no-solder chip likely to have caused the problem with the lens? It just refuses to read CDs. DVDs are fine. I won't bother getting the unit fixed - most of my games are DVDs and I daresay the games I am waiting to get are mainly DVD ones - GTA3 Vice and The Getaway being faily large games I imagine so the loss of CD readability isn't such a loss in my opinion.

Is it possible, on the off-chance, to somehow "rip" a CD game onto a DVD- since the PS2 has no problem reading DVDs this might be a solution? Anybody know if this is doable?

Any further advice on this would be much appreciated.

All the best,
Andrew.

How EXACTLY are you trying to boot cd based games (Originals and backups)???

SEE my post on booting procedures and see if any of the mentioned procedures will work for you..
Mod Chip booting procedures.... (http://www.fileforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38232) :D

Let me know what you come up with.....
Something sounds really strange....
Usually when the PS2 has trouble reading discs its DVD discs that seem to go first....

I only have original PSX games and an original Pro Evolution disc to try. With each I just boot as normal. - Power on, press eject, put disc in, press eject... then whirring kerclung whiirr kerclung etc. If you go to the browser it says Disc read error. None of the booting methods you have docuimented work. I guess the lens must be knackered for CD reading.

Cheers for the help,
Andrew.
