I've just bought some unbranded Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs from a web supplier. They arrived with no badged packaging and nothing to indicate they are definitely from Taiyo Yuden. Is there any way to check?

You need an ATIP checker - I think Feurio may be able to check this. You could try this or find another proggie that's dedicated to this.

Try cd-r identifier.

You can find it (hopefully) here (http://cd-rw.org/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/cdridentifier.cfm).
