Hello again!

Since I'll soon be getting a PS2 (thanks BG for the pre-purchase advice), I want a good sound system for it. The tv I have is just monoaural, so I thought maybe I can plug the audio red and yellow wires to a hi-fi or amplifier sound system to max out the sound quality.

Can anyone recommend a good but moderate priced hi-fi I can buy? One that can allow me to use its speakers for an external source such as a ps2, of course :) Funny, but the hi-fi I have does not allow that.

I try to choose a hi-fi over an amplifier because I could use the hi-fi for more things like music, vcds and dvds. Moreover, the amplifier needs separate speakers and the uses are limited.

Can anyone make some recommendations?

Are you looking to get a "home stereo system" to run you PS2 through? I'm not sure I fully understand what you are looking for..(I'm dumb...:D )
I currently have my PS2 ran through a Pioneer Dolby Digital receiver. Its awesome....

Geoduck, for what you have described get yourself one of these - http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/details.php?CartID=0210152101451455278&moduleno=23120&modulecode= - and it should do the trick.

Not too up to speed on the hi-fi scene, still have my trusty phillips with dolby pro logic 5.1 surround sound amp. Bloody marvellous with it rigged up to PS2

Thanks for replying, BG and PSX Paul!

Actually, what I wanted was an "audio entertainment system" (depends on how you look at it) , be it a hi-fi, home entertainment system, or just a pair of speakers and receiver that can be hooked up to the ps 2, for better sound quality during gameplay.

My average budget would be around US$ 250 ++. Where I'm currently living, the conversion rate comes up to probably 1k!!!

So, I am looking for a MODERATELY priced device that can do the job (let ps 2 hook up its audio plugs to it).

I've heard Sony has this thing built into its hi-fi's called game-sync that lets a psx (and probably ps 2) hook up to it. Are these expensive?

Basically, which would be cheaper, a speaker set and receiver, or a hi-fi?

Since I already have a vcd and cd capable hi-fi, I just thought that buying a new hi-fi with an added dvd mode would save me more money in the long run, instead of buying a speaker set and receiver.

Just to make things simple, which do you think would save me more money and value:

1) Buy a set of speakers and a receiver, and get a separate dvd player later (I heard that playing too many formats on the ps 2 gives it more wear and tear, and it breaks up faster)

2) Buy an audio-in capable hi-fi with dvd option

I really need some advice

I would go with option 1....
You really don't want to use your PS2 for movies....
Its just like anything else, the more you use it, the quicker it will wear it out....
Also if you go the "option 1" route....You will have a more versatile system.... Not only will you be able to hook up your PS2, but you could hook up "almost" anything else you can imagine...
Beleive me...There is nothing like playing your PS2 through a dolby digital receiver and good speakers....(Will make you FEEL like your inside the game instead of just playing it)

Lol it sure does, i connected my PS2 to a 135 watt per- channel sony digital reciever with a 5 speeker surround sound, Two 15 inch sub woofers produce ground shaking bass while you play. Its totally awsome!!:)

I suggest a Denon 3802 or 3803 reciever and B&W 604 S3 speakers.
It's the best you can do in the mid range price, and it's ready for the future. The Denon is a full 6.1 amp and is upgradable to 7.1. If you choose another, DO NOT get a reciever without Pro-Logic 2! It makes all the old formats sound great, even crappy two channel stereo. Check audioreview.com for details.
Hope this helps :)

Thanks for all the recommendations BG, Warlock, PSX Paul and tsb_hcy!!!

Speakers and receiver it is. I'll get the dvd player later. In any case, dvd's are pretty expensive where I'm currently living, and not much "in vogue". Vcd's are still pretty dominant here.

Anyway, thanks all!!! :)
