Different coloured DVDs

I am looking at buying a used PS2 but it will only read the Green (I believe) backed DVD's. I am talking new PS2 games. not copies!

Any idea if this is a repairable PS2, or is it not worth buying? I believe it was bought when the PS2 first came out a few years ago.
Is the 1st PS2's worth buying, or would I be better off buying a new one?

You would DEFINATELY be better off buying a NEW one.... If its the first version of the PS2.....The lasers were crap in them...That would explain why it only reads certain discs.... You "Could" repair it, if you could find a place to buy a V1 laser....(Good Luck).
Just come up with some extra money and get a new....You will be much happier regardless if you intend to mod it or not....
