View Full Version : anyone want to help an idiot with networking?

i have got two puters in my home which i want to network together to share 1 internet connection so i can play online games. however i am a little lost and need so advice in doing it, i have look on the internet but it assums that you already have a network up and running.

i have:

2 x machines both running windows 98se
2 x NIC (1 3com PCI and 1 3com ISA) both RJ45 connection
20m of UTP cable (was told if I use this then I dont need a hub)

so what i need help with is connecting them together and configuring them to work and see each other on the network, hell i may even play some games on it :o)

please can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?

To directly connect two computers without the use of a hub, router, switch etc, you will need cross-over cable.

A cross-over cable is still cat-5 UTP cable, but it is wired slightly different to the standard. You should be able to purchase the cross-over UTP cable from the same place you got the other equipment.

If you want send my $5 via PayPal and I'll send you a cross over cable kit. Which comes with a 3" cross over cable and you can go to a computer store to get a RJ45 cuppler. This way you don't have to have a 20' cross over cable and later on when you have more PC you can keep the same 20' cable and use it with a hub.

The $5 shold cover shipping.

You need to connnect the network cable (crossover) to each computer. Unless your getting a Hub/Router?

Then find basic info here http://www.alabamatechnologies.com/tutorials/networking/index.asp

If you want to share a 56k internet connect without a hub/router
then you can use software like; WINRoute http://www.kerio.com/us/kerio.html

Sharing a dsl/cable without a router then you'll need a 2nd nic card in one of the computers using the same software above would work fine.

Configing Winroute I can help ya with if you get that there...

If you are using WinXP you can just use the internet sharing feature in XP, I used WinRoute and other Proxy software. I don't like anyone of them, so I break down and buy a router and it is a lot easier.

You're right about WinXP Mammoth, but akahomeruk needs to physically connect them first with the mentioned Cross-over cable.

Yeah, if he needs someone to make him a cross over cable, I'll make one and send it to him for $5 (cover shipping and some of my time) Best Buy, CompUSA, or MicroCenter is selling those cable like $10+

Just trying to help.

BTW, anyone need network cable let me know I'll send you really cheap, I bought 1000ft from Home Depot and use about 1/2 for my LAN party so the other half is just sitting at home collecting dust right now. Hehehe.

You can connect a broadband internet connection through a USB port. Thats how mine works, eliminating the need for an extra NIC, and I.P. troubles.
