View Full Version : PS2 won't play any new DVD copies, but it will play the old ones

I have a Neo4 and Origa combo and have made several sucessful DVD backups (Using a Pioneer 104 writer and Nero 5.9.9.0) of my originals (Final Fantasy, MGS and Ace Combat).

I am using Infinity disks and they worked well.. Infact, they played as well as the originals.

Several months past and I made no further backups, but recently I decided to do 'Medal Of Honour'.

The result was the the game loaded VERY slowly (It took 15 mins before the game started) and you could hear the laser retrying.. As a result, the disk was un-usable.

Thinking my PS2 was to blame, I tried my old backups but they still worked perfectly.

Prehaps its bad media, but the Infinity disks were from the same batch.

As a test, I asked my friend to test the backup on his PS2.. Again, the results were the same.. The disk took ages to load.. We then tried another copy on his Pionee A03 onto a Apple disk..

This time the results were worse.. It loads but its even slower.. Infact, the 'load bar' never moved past 10% and after 20 mins we gave up.

At this point, I lost interest, but this week decided to try again with TOCA.

I again used an Infinity (From the same batch as before)... The results were again bad.. You can hear the laser re-trying and the game never gets past the black screen at the beginning.

What could be going wrong? I can't blame the PS2 as it plays the older games.. I can't blame the media as they disks are from the same batch (And an Apple disk had similar problems).. I also can't really blame my writer, as my friends copy (on the Apple) was the same.

Can anyone explain why I am having this kind of problem?

An obvious test would be to make another copy of the working disks, but I can't afford to waste any more media on this.

I hope someone has an idea!

If anything try putting your PS2 in a vertical position when booting your problematic games. That makes your laser a free floating laser (no gravity holding it back) allowing it to get closer to the disc without any resistance.

If your PS2 is already like that or this option doesnt work then Im sorry your laser may be quiting on you.

But that doesn't explain why it still plays the disks that I wrote MONTHS ago with ZERO problems... Its only the recent DVD burns which I won't play.. CDs play fine BTW.

Also, if I take the same set of disks to a friends, I have exactly the same problem (i.e the old disks play fine, but the new ones don't)..

This seems more in keeping with either dodgy media, or writing problems..

Its not a major problem, as I still have the originals.. But I would like to know whats going on.

during the several months in between making PS2 backups, did you use your writer for anything else (audio/dvd etc)?

Yep.. been used for everything.. And to be fair, its still working as well as ever.

I have 2 DVD players.. A newsih Pioneer (Wichh plays everything) and an older Samsung.

The Samsung has always been a little tempremental playing DVD-Rs (which makes it a good benchmark) and it still plays DVD-Rs (whether writen recently or a long time ago) just as well (or badly) as ever.

Nothing seems to add up... I just seems that there is some incompatability between the Media, writer and PS2.

I think I might have to try some different media.. Just to be sure.. I have some TraxData, which I really like.. not sure how the PS2 will take them.

The difference appears tome to be media.

Sorry.. Forgot to correct my original post..

I initally used Nero (I did for MOH).. However, I recently discovered that Nero seems very tollerant to 'read errors'. (i.e the master can be damaged, but nero reads it without errors)..

I have since switched to RecordNOW.

This problem has occured with Nero and RecordNOW. To answer your question, my friend (who tried the Apple) uses the same Nero version (5.5.9.0).

It just doesn't make any sence.. Does it??

The same batch means the same batch number on the inner ring. Is that so?

I think I need to repeat my tests with different media...

I don't think that its a software problem.. It was, I don't think that the disks would boot at all.

I checked out the Tutorials on PSXCOPYWORLD, but they just confirm what I am already doing.. As its a 1:1 disk copy, there is little that you can change...

I have some Traxdata and Neo disks which give good results for DVD movies.. I will give them a go.

However, I am wondering if one of the problems I have with Toca (Black screen) is some kind of protection.

After I get the problem, even the original boots with a 'black screen'.. I have a feeling that its got something to do with the Origia chip..

Once I completely reset the PS2, the original boots fine...

If this is the case, I still have the 'slow loading' problem with my DVD-Rs, but the black screen that I get with TOCA may be unrelated.
