But I don't want to mod my PS2 in order to do so...
can someone tell me how to do this?
(most of the files I'm starting with are .bin, btw)

I dont understand why you would not want to mod your ps2. The only ways to boot an image on a non modded ps2 can actually do more harm to your ps2.
Just get a mod man!

Well.. the last time I modded something (my Dreamcast) I managed to short the power supply in the process, and had to replace that, too. I'm not sure I want to run that risk again.

Like how?
Get a pro to do it. Try www.freedomlives.com I have heard nothing but positives about them.

Seattle, WA ... but I'd want to find any possible way of doing it without a mod, first.
If you have a v4 or higher PS2 just get a solderless chip. They are very easy to install yourself. I got mine from Gamegizmo.com and had no problems with it (except for using Memorex DVDs). Gamegizmo is even having a 2 for 1 sale at the moment.
without a chip you need to break your system to gain access to the inside with a knife which can destroy not only your games but you system. For $30 bucks for a chip and about $25 for a gameshark your better off.

I did actually just recently buy a PS2 of my own.. like 2-3 days after the first post in the topic...
I'm gonna wait to mod till after the 90-day factory warranty... and since I just bought it, it's prolly at least a v4.
If you just bought it brand new it's gonna be Ver.7.
Or Ver5/6..No doubt..
Check your SCPH Number..It's the following 30001, 35001,
30001-R or the 39001.
If it has R on the end you got Ver.5/6.
