View Full Version : How 2 Get PSX BkUps to run on PS2--no mod?

Got a PS2, 3006 R with the extra screw in the expansion bay. Gameshark 2, v2 with extra PSX bonus CD and cart for running cheats. Use CloneCD (4.xx, always current) and use same settings used to successfully run PS2 CD Bakups with swap trick and GS2 CD (use creditcard to force tray-pin up and slide tray out). Almost got Legend of dragoon to work, but i think it had encryption protection (LybCrypt, maybe) because it gave me some weird screen with a big red circle with a line through it. Any other games just cause the system to lock up when i try to swap the disk. The system is still new, so I don't want to install a mod chip yet if not necessary.
Was curious if a CODEBREAKER CD would work, or maybe an older retail version of the PSX GameShark, maybe even the light version. Any ideas would be appreciated. Just for good measure, I have tried some patching bin files created from CDRWIN via PPF-O-Matic, tried converting sector sizes, ISO-9660 conversion, even the "AddZer0" method reccomended for earlier GameShark versions--no luck...maybe a combination...not sure what else to try?
Thanks in advance for your time!
There are a few dodgy methods of tray opening etc., but if you want to play backups properly there really is no substitute for a messiah chip, and then get yourself a Pioneer A03/A04 to burn dvd r's.
Messiah is a 23 wire install and you NEED to know what youre doing soldering miniature style!! Its very intricate, you need a 0.1/0.2mm iron to do it and some very fine wire like 30swg. Frying your ps2 is easily done if inexperienced.
If this sounds too much, best bet get someone to do it for you, see Charlie, system administrator here, if stuck.

Thanks Ron, but as I stated, I want to avoid modding until after I've had the box for a while--only had it 1 month so far. I've seen a lot of posts about running the games without the mod, but they all mention using CDRWIN for the duping Unfortunately, my CDRW is not recognized by CDRWIN--probably because it is on a secondary IDE card (too much junk in my PC), so I've been trying to use CloneCD instead, since it has 100% success with all my PC games and the PS2 Games so far. Just curious if there is a special setting for Clone CD, or if I need a different cracking CD other than the PSX cd that comes bundled with the GameShark 2 Version 2 for the PS2.
Thanks!
you'd rather continue to damage your 1 month old ps2 than mod it?
not a very smart idea.
the credit card trick (along with any other tray opening tricks) damages your drive's mechanics, since you are forcing them to move. sooner or later they will have problems and eventually fail.

Try using ClonyXXL... It will scan the disc to determine what type of copy protection is on it and set-up Clone CD for you...(Make sure your burner is 100 % Clone CD compatible) Just because it works to backup other formats does not mean it is 100 % compatible... Go to Clone CD's website and look under Supported Drives and see if yours is there...
Also, stop wasting time with the credit card trick and buy a messiah.... Your machine will last alot longer and with a Messiah you don't have to worry about what WILL BOOT and WHAT WILL NOT...... EVERYTHING WILL BOOT......
