View Full Version : problems with cd-r´s
Hi ya´ll. i just copped the dreamcast one month ago. (yes, i know im kinda late, but the dc came as a bundle with three games for only 70 bucks as a special offer)
now i tried to burn some games. i.e. i tried the utopia boot disc and crazy taxi 2. (i´ve done exactly like described in the faq´s)
but when i put them in my dc. i get the audio-screen. and they dont get recognized as game-disks.
after wasting a bunch of cd-r´s i stumbled upon the info that the post nov´2000 produced dc´s cant play backup gd. now, wtf.
since i just purchased the dc i guess thats where the problem lies in. but im wondering why i can play burned audio-cd´s (or does that have nothing to do with it???)
btw. i searched everywhere on the dc and the package, the production date were nowhere to be found.
maybe ya´ll can help me out on that. (its the crazy taxi, tomb raider, uefa dream soccer bundle bought in germany)
peace ya´ll

Try Bin2Boot to make your games. It should work on your DC :
http://www.megagames.com/console/cgi-bin/dldc.cgi?b2b_gui01b!rar
Any DC can play audio CDs.
nah, you got that wrong.
i tried the utopia boot disc, wont work.
i tried crazy taxi 2 (bootable version) wont work. (i problably dont need bin2boot)
the boot disk is a .nrg file, crazy taxi 2 a .cdi file.
i use nero to burn.
there must be another explanation.
(i know that the dc can play aúdio cd´s but my question was about playin cd-r´s with audio tracks even though i thought that i probably have a newer dc which cant boot cd-r´s.

Bin2Boot isn't a boot disk.
I places the audio track AFTER data track, so that you can boot your game on some "protected" DC.
You could have any image, it wouldn't change anything. What's important is how your CD is made (data or audio first).
You should try that and tell me AFTER if I'm wrong.
Check the "Solution" in your link.
To elaborate a little further:
You should be able to convert just about any image to one that will burn and run properly on your DC. You will NOT be able to do this without doing some tinkering from a command prompt (I'll assume DOS) -- there is no push-a-button-and-it's-ready solution. You're also probably going to generate a lot of coasters in the process of learning how to do this, so get used to the idea.
What your DC is detecting is a particular disc format -- one or more audio tracks followed by a data track, which is the format that most cracked DC images have. The burned/not-burned status isn't the issue -- you can burn all the CDR audio discs you like, and the DC will see them as single-session audio CDs and play them just fine.
What you need to do is convert your disc images to ones that have the data track first and then the audio, and bin2boot is one of the primary tools for doing so. (The FAQs pointed to in this thread describe the other tools of the trade, such as cdi2nero, mkisofs, and cdirip.) You're going to have to take your CDI/NRG images apart (using cdirip, CDMage or ISOBuster, or Nero if you've already burned the disc whether it works in your DC or not), tweak them as described in the FAQs, use mkisofs to create a new .ISO from the tweaked files, use bin2boot to turn that into a .CDI image, then cdi2nero to convert that to a Nero NRG that should now play on your DC.

And if you're not careful, you might learn something, too. Now eat your Jell-O pudding... ;)
