well I am fairly new to this but from the item description it says it requires game shark or action replay to work so that is an indication that yes almost 100 % sure you have to use the swap method. to my knowledge ALL no solder or usb mods use swap method. but if u want easy try the new no solder mods at this url. I am getting one next pay period it is plug and play and supports DVDr and CDr wich is unheard of for a no solder. anyway here it is..... also they sell pre messia chipped PS2s hehe

it needs a swap, it doesn't play original imports, and it doesn't play dvd-r.

It's a waste of money, I would buy a messiah, Origa, Nova or even a no solder mod before wasting my time on one that wont load dvd-r backups..... This is just my opinion of course:D

if u scroll down to features then see it says sytem requirments that is where it says you need game chark or ar anyway yeah it is a waste of money and a crap card. if you are lazy like me and it seems you are :) go to the link i listed in first reply and get a no solder mod all ya gotta do is take apart ps once and plug it in. and it plays back dvd r and cdr backups and foriegn yes my spelling sux i know hehe anyway hope we helped
