Just wondering has seen this problem before.
I recently installed an internal modchip in my PS2. It appeared to be working fine. I could play backup copies of PS1 and PS2 games. I only tried games that were in CDROM format since I do not own a dvd burner. They all worked.
Then I decided to play some dvd movies I had rented. Everyone one of them skipped. They all skipped just about every minute.
Does anyone have good idea as what exactly could cause this.
Please Help:confused:
first of all, what chip? if it's a neo 2.2, did you install the capacitor? if not, it damaged your dvd laser already, and will destroy it completely within a short while.

I don't know if the chip was a NEO. I bought it from modchip.com.
On their web site they don't mention anything about neo or having to install a capacitator.
was it a small chip with 8 pins?
if so, that's the neo 2.2.
without the capacitor, the constant pulsing of the signal will damage and eventually destroy the dvd laser.. which is likely what happened to you.
you can try adjusting the laser A LITTLE, but make sure you do install the cap on pin 2. otherwise the dvd laser will die very soon.. be prepared to need one within the next months anyways, because the damage is already done.

was it that one?
then not only are they basically destroying every ps2 they sell a chip for, they also rip you off. 30 fucking bucks for a $1.50 chip.. it's max. 10$ at most decent shops, and includes the capacitor there.
for that price you can almost get an origa chip, which doesn't damage the laser and plays original imports too.

That's the one..
Sounds like I got screwed....
Do you know where I can get a capacitator?
Since your pretty sure my laser is going out, do you know a site where I can get another laser?
Thanx
lik-sang sells lasers.
you can get a cap at any electronics store. you need a 1 uf cap. - pin to pin 2, + pin to the ps2 board.

Thanx Arakon,
I'm going to try installing capacitor first to see if it helps playing the dvd's. Then replace the laser.
I looked at lik-sang web site, but they did not show a price for the laser, and they only showed a small laser. Is the small laser the one I need? They were also out of stock.
Thanx again,
You've been a big help.
Acraiger
it's a small part, yes.
it was 35$ last time I ordered there.

Arakon
Well I installed a cap, but did not help. So I unsoldered pin 1 on the chip to prevent using the chip, still nothing.
You said I could try adjust the laser, you mean the dvd laser?
If so how much should I adjust it?
Do I try turning it right or left a bit?
Do you know what a safe measurment for ohm reading on the dvd pot?
Craig
well, the damage is already done then.
adjust the laser (right pot when they're facing towards you) by turning it VERY SLIGHTLY clockwise.
use an ohmmeter/multimeter, otherwise you're too likely to damage it. go in 20-50 ohm steps until it reads properly again.
you have to go DOWN in ohms, not up.
