help with .tar files

can anyone please tell me what to do with .tar files?

It is a compressed format.

Try using WinZip or Gzip (use a searchengine to find it) to "untar".

winzip and winace can both handle .tar files. tar is a typical unix (low-)compression method and stands for "Tape ARchive".

You can also use Power Archiver (http://www.powerarchiver.com). Its a very powerful tool that can handle most compressed files.
