the laser from a v3 is a bit worser. a version 5 has a better laser. it is able to read dvd-rw. But a messiah chip is very hard to install. a man has try to install a messiah in my v3 and the dvd works or cd. not both! So good luck!!!

We've modded a few v3s with Messiah and ultimately they work with DVD-R. The laser is the problem as Dust and Schumy have stated.
The NEO2.2 could lead you to disaster. Your laser could fry within a week or within a couple of months unless it is protected on pin 2 with a capacitor and a resistor to prevent the NEO's 5.5v spitting out onto a 3.3v circuit.
Messiah is completely neutral to DVD movies. They play in the normal way booted with a double tapon the RESET button. Import movies will play through AR2/v2 which is also double-tap booted.
If your laser gives out, it will NOT be because of the DVD-Rs, it'll be through continuous use. Then you simply replace the laser and the PS2 is as good as new (sort of).
