hi guys. I know this has been said plenty a times but, the neokey is a piece of crap. Sometimes I have trouble loading psx backups. They wouldn't load evertime like they were supposed to. So I came here to this forum and did a search on the neokey to see if anyone else was having the same trouble. Keep in mind that I have a US ver 4 u5 ps2 and I had this mod install done by a prof.
Well I did the search and went through every thread on the subject. The vast majority were basically asking the same questions over and over. (will the sbox play dvd-rs?) It's very repeatitive but I had those same questions at first. Anyway, I came across one psot by a user named incline. He basically had trouble loading ps2 backups and it took him 3 resets to load psx backups. Now when I first got my system modded with the neokey I was able to boot psx backups with no prob. Of course I only had one and I didn't know what I was doing since I got no instuctions with it. It was all trial & error. Well today I got a package of cd-r games from Maylasia. Half were psx titles. None of these games boot- neither ps2 or psx. So when I put in my only psx game it didn't work now. That's when I came to this forum and found the post by incline. He said 3 resets worked for him so I tried that and my psx backup worked. These newly ordered games don't work still, though. Can anyone tell me why? All the bottoms are silver, whereas my other ps2 backups are not, if that makes a difference.

Nevertheless here's what I use to boot psx backups, or at least the one that I have:
Put the neokey in the on position while the console is in the red lamp mode or with the swicth off.
Either way press the eject button to make the tray come out. This will make the system come on automatically too.
The neokey light should be on now.
The system will go to the screen where you can select the browser or sys config, because there's no disk in the machine.
Choose browser. Put your backup psx disk in and press eject so the tray will close.
After a few secs the disk will be read and it you will get the red screen of death (you know the: "please insert a playstation or playstation 2 format disc")
At this point restat your machine. The game will then boot.

Hope this helps.
Can someone please answer my questions about my new cdrs that won't work? I'd really appreciate it. thanks.;)

Now that we know you have the boot method established, the logical thing to suspect is that the CD-Rs are crap and don't work.

That can be checked out on a friend's better-chipped PS2.

I agree the USB mod is not the best chip by far but you shouldnt have to go through all the crap you described to play PSX backups. You should be able to power the ps2 up by pressing eject, insert PSX backup, turn on chip, press reset once and PSX backup should load. I used a USB mod for months and had no trouble loading anything except dvd-r games. I use a Sony CRX-175E2 cdrw, I use only verbatim cdr's with clone cd 3.0.7.2 along with CDRWIN 3.8e (Fully licensed software) and ppf-o-matic when patching is required. Read at 8x copy at 4x. Like Charlie stated, the backups you purchased are probally crap

I agree with both Charlie and nightstalker, Try the backups in a PS2 modded with a internal modchip, neo 2.2 or better. Most backups i have purchased from the net have been of poor quality.
BTW Nightstalker, nice signature, I know a few people like that! LOL

Thanks for the replies guys. Well see the thing that makes me suspect the neokey is that before, when I first got it installed, I could psx backups the exact same way like one of you just mentioned. Secondly I have no friends with a modded ps2. (They were all to scared to go through with the installation.) I did, however find out that games in questions are pressed silvers- so that may be the problem. The guy I bought them suggested that I burn these silvers he sold me on high quality media and that they should then work with the neokey. He says all his customers with a neokey have good luck with this method. Here's the reply message the guy sent me:

"Here's some solution you could try :

It should work good with Neokey modchip, with Gameshark utility disc.
Most of our customers use the same thing as well.
If the backups don't load, try reburn them on a reliable/branded CD-R disc
(e.g. Verbatim, TDK, Kodak, Maxell, etc.) and load the CD-R disc instead.
Burn at 2x if possible for optimum result.
Try one by one to avoid wastage on the CD-R disc.

Many of our customers have already tried this before,
and it's a proven solution. Try it, and let me know the result soon."

Like I said before I doubt if his games are bad, but I will try to find someone to test them for me. Thanks again guys.
