View Full Version : Oddity With My V5 R-Mod

I have a V5 No-Solder R-Mod. Works like a champ with the exception of one little problem: it forcibly ejects the door during swap(s).

The instructions say to hold the eject button down until the power light changes from green to orange, however this never happens on mine. I hold the eject button down and then the door comes 'shooting' out (like 3-5x the normal eject speed). I swap and then it retracts at about the same speed. Is this normal? Do all of these chips behave like this?

Obviously, I'm concerned about long-term damage to the drive from this type of ejecting (I just bought this V5 and could conceivably still return it as I have the receipt).

Any help, as always, is greatly appreciated.

It's normal for the R MOD. I don't know about any long term
damage-seems harmless enough, although it did scare me at first!

Same here, I contacted lik-sang about it when i first got my r-mod, they claim this is normal.

I think there is a long term problem that anyone who has purchased should put back for comment to their supplier.

The central spindle (a white cone) is pushed up when the tray reaches a certain position and engages the disk. If there is mis-synchronisation through either mechanical wear and tear or lack of lubrication on the tray grooves (because of this extra work), then the spindle doesn't engage and the disk is skewed. You can hear it rattle.

Now this is my experience of our first JAP 15000 with an eject tray mod chip. We solved this with the Origachip which allows swaps to be made under EJECT button action and DVD Region X. At normal speed, engagement of the spindle is assured.

Whether or not newer PS2 designs avoid this problem, I don't know. I doubt it.

Whew! Thanks for all the love gang.

At least I know it's not just me (what was that about misery loving company?). I guess I'll go ahead and sell my old V1 then and take the risk for now.

Which reminds me: does anybody know for real if there's a V1 direct boot anywhere close on the horizon? I know we've all been hearing for months there'd be, but all I still see is 'V4 NTSC only' everytime I look. It's just that I'd really hate to get rid of my V1 only to find out in like a month there's a no-swap chip on the way and have to wait FOREVER for a V5 mod (however, after having been through all of this M-clone stuff with the rest of ya, I'm beginning to wonder if a V5 self-boot isn't more likely than a V1 model).

As always, any help is greatly appreciated
