rtcw on cd-rw

hello all. if i have rtcw on a cd-rw disc, would i be able to buy the game, use the serial number that comes with the game i buy, and then take that game back for refund and just use the rtcw i have on cd-rw disc?
also...will this work with multiplayer cause thats what is most important anyways?
