newbie.... What is a fixed.exe file

Hi all, I am new at this and was just wondering what a fixed.exe patch does for a game. Is it the same thing as a no cd. How and where do you go about installing a fixed.exe.

usually a fixed-exe is a .exe file of the game that recognizes copies of the original cd, but sometimes it's a no-cd crack.

if you're not sure if it will work or not do like me, create a backup of the game (copy the game's folder) and try the crack. if it's what you want delete the backup. if it isn't use the backup and delete the cracked one

Can you run me by the steps for the civilization 3 fixed.exe. I am not sure what to do with it after I install the game, which I have already done
