AOE2 and multiplayer problem when using backup of my own CD

I've got AOE and have copied the CD for when I want to play it across my home LAN, however when I go to start a multiplayer version it says that I must be running the same version of AOE2 on both machines?

Please help.

One machine is running Win98 and the other XP.
