ps1 backup on a ps2

Is they any way to play ps1 backup on a ps2 whit no mod chip I try Import Player Light v2.1 [EURO] burn it whit CDR Win when I try it in the ps2 it came up whit
“Please insert a PS or PS2 format disc” is they any way around this or do I have to put a mod chip in as I was hoping to avoid do this till my warranty run out
