Playing PS1 Backups Without Mod

Is it even possible to play a CDR backup of a PS game without a Modchip(excluding the swap trick)?? I've heard many different stories and I dont know what to believe! I've heard absolute NOs and others that say you can if you go through certain programs to patch and play... any help??

if you have one of the very 1st psx you can do the swap trick if don't have the very 1st psx you will need some sort of mod chip external or internal (is the best way) no you can't just patch it and hope it works (paching just for by-passing the protection or to convert from ntsc to pal or vice-versa)
