Quick question, please help

How do you know when a game needs to be patched or not, I'm in the US so all I get are NTC (or whatever) ISO's. I saw a list and I read that often but how can you tell if an ISO or Image needs to be patched?

A game needs to be patched if:
-its protected
-its imported and you want to play it on your countries system
-you want to add cheats/trainers
