Hey do you still need a mod chip?

Hey i recently got a used playstation off of a friend after tellin em how mine burnt out,

my old playstation needed a mod chip to play back up's...iw as just wondering is it still needed or is there something else i can do or what?

i really don't wanna order another mod chip an install it.

Yes you do need a chip to play backups!!
no other way i dont think??
