For decompression only, 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org) would be the easiest. For compression under Windows, try these pages: https://github.com/pmq20/node-packer/issues/43, http://domoticx.com/bestandssysteem-squashfs-tools-software/ and https://labalec.fr/erwan/?p=1363.

Think you Joe Forster/STA
problem in mksquashfs on ubuntu
I found a problem which is the incompatibility of the file before and after the compression
Even without modification only disassembly and assembly there is a difference
look this file squashfs gzip 131072 bytes

I don't understand your problem. 7-Zip reports that the archiver is fine:

>7z t hsqs2.bin

7-Zip 18.01 (x86) : Copyright (c) 1999-2018 Igor Pavlov : 2018-01-28

Scanning the drive for archives:
1 file, 20279224 bytes (20 MiB)

Testing archive: hsqs2.bin
