Diablo 2 on Lan keeps locking up! Help

I am running two copies on a hub. Its just a TCP/IP game. Which ever computer is the host has fequent lock-ups. Both the same version, but one is a copy. 105b. One is the original. It Locks up every 5 minutes and stays locked up for at least 2 minutes. The CD-Rom sounds weird when it does lock up too. Can anyone tell me how to stop this?

I tried to play on the LAN with some friends and we found that whichever maching was hosting the game would freeze in the middle of game play for a minute or two and then move around real quick like it was tring to catch up.

I called Blizzard on the problem.
They told me to make sure I was using directx 7 or greater.
To go into START/RUN/MSCONFIG and under the general tab to select "Selective Startup". In selective startup to un-check everything except System.ini and Win.ini.
And lastly to use the Video Test icon and then to select DirectDraw instead of Glide.

I did all this and then went into the game to test it.
It still messed up.
I called Blizzard back up (on hold for 35minutes) and they had no answer....

I am really open to suggestions here.....
The only answer I've been able to find is to have one more machine than players and have it be the host machine.
