First download FREEARC here: http://freearc.org/Download.aspx
The thread starter post is quite frustrating and complicated for some people here.
Let me ease some pain here a bit;
After step 2, skip step 3 for now and compress the 2 folder first "Tracks" & "Vehicles" using FreeArc. Now repeat step 3.
Skip step 6 & 7 get the already modified file from #43 http://fileforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1154&d=1253280616 and overwrite the file in Need for Speed(TM) SHIFT folder.
Done.
that's it!
Step 3 must be after step 4

Something here is not good. The original ISO is 5.4 GB. When the decompressed files from the file Dammy.7z to temp dir and overwrite old files new size of temp dir is 1.9 Gb . Its means it is not possible to get at the end ISO of 3.5 GB. Please check this and correct it.

I thought too but you must do the step 4 before 3 ;)
In case someone is bumping on the same problem like me - FreeArc is crashing as soon as compressing is started, if windows pagefile is disabled. Just enable it and all will be fine.
Thanks peterf1999, conversion tested / working.

is it able to do unpacking of "NFSS_arc.exe" silently in background of installation ?

I have followed all instructions, and got an image of 2Gb.
Did 3 after 4, extracted the autorun already patched autorun first though.
Does the dummy tracks and vehicles replace the arc files?
Or should it be the other way around?

Well if you read a little before trying this its EASY to figure it out.
IF you do step 3
3) Extract & overwrite 'Dummy.7z' contents to 'temp\Need for Speed(TM) SHIFT\Pakfiles\'
Then you MUST do the last part of step 4
4) Start FREEARC browse game's folder after installation, or directly from DVD9 select:
Otherwise use your games install folder, run freearc, then replace dummy files.
Come on its NOT Rocket Science... just read a little first.

Nothing is wrong.. please read carefully and try to understand.. the OP is confusing a bit step 3 should be after step 4 maybe, coz some ppl just don't get it..
In simple words how this conversion works is brilliant..
You compress the Tracks and Drivers folders located in Pakfiles folder using FreeARC and then place the compressed exe in you game root directory and replace the original folder with dummy files..
I'm just patching Autorun now.. will post if I have any problems.. Thanks peterf1999
EDIT: Oh WOW!! My NFSS_arc.exe is just 869MB.. I opened the file with FreeARC and it has both Tracks and Drivers folders.. it must have used some super compression algorithm.. im making an ISO now to check installation..
Thanks,
peterf1999 is the man, again.
Although steps 3 and 4 are reversed, everything works perfectly well. :)
In threads like these you can see who hasn't got a clue and who knows his/her system very well (and therefore is a pro).
Always funny! :D

RE-read his steps.. there NOT backwards... IF you replace the files with dummy ones then you MUST use freearc on original DVD9. IF you dont replace them then use installed games folder. people learn to read properly.

Hey guys, I don't want to spook anybody, but anybody know about this freearc properly as kaspersky internet security reports it having Exploit.Win32.IMG-WMF.bdz trojan. It refuses to disinfect. Don't download freearc as a full complete download will turn your computer in to a Russian Zombie! Please check it out on virustotal https://www.virustotal.com/analisis/4d9ca464f491fcd6aee2c580debb2e16c2c56e18a939065aaa 0e9919a3efa53e-1253739897

Next time check the actual EXE, not the ZIP package: https://www.virustotal.com/analisis/125b7e0c03c173f5549e3e18002a50a275ef835711597d80d6 4a1a80896972b0-1253742054
Hi Joe Forster/STA thanks for the correction, but even the win32 exe has the same trojan this is from the Freearc package not only the portable version one way around this package is to open the zip with winrar and deleted simpl_host_with_simple_codec.exe in the Addons\CLS directory. The arc.exe is the directory and probably works, but you shouldn't download the FreeArc-0.51-win32.exe package. Check it https://www.virustotal.com/analisis/6539dcec7fc5f5a62e0b44dd6f796a7ef7a09c16ec43d100ac 2e6ffc74a8faba-1252839014.

Only one of AVG, Kaspersky and NOD32 - our favorites - finds something in it. Also, a rescan with the most current virus databases (!!!) - http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/6539dcec7fc5f5a62e0b44dd6f796a7ef7a09c16ec43d100ac 2e6ffc74a8faba-1253748572 - shows a few more hits: something in the package seems suspicious to a few virus scanners. It's a false positive, an innocent NSIS package; why would you think that such a popular software would spread malware - especially on purpose - and noone reports it within a minute?

Can I add a folder to the "temp" folder to move the new patch that is out or would that somehow mess with the installation?
thanks!

no it wont mess with instalation. you will just have to manually goto that folder and run any updates before copying over any nodvd cracks.

question:
with this procedure and autorun.dat patched, does the game setup decompress nfss_arc.exe during normal installation?
if I understood, dummy.7z file prepares the empty files in pakfiles folder and later nfss_arc.exe fills those blanks, but, what launches nfss_arc while installing the game?
thanks
pakrat2k2
24-09-2009, 19:36
The 'fixed' setup that you extract into the temp folder before creating your ISO. That launches the nfss_arc.exe into your chosen install gamefolder.
Thanks peterf1999. It works well.
Thanks to pakrat2k2 for noninfected Freearc.

What Program did you use to edit Autorun.dat and where can I learn this?
pakrat2k2
26-09-2009, 17:01
the program to edit SOME dat files AND most msi files is called "ORCA". Read thru some of the other conversions here, they contain pictures that show the changes made to the MSI file.
NOTE: NOT all dat files can be edited with orca, only those that were msi files but renamed as a dat file by game producer.
do a google search for it. Once installed then right click on your MSI file & edit with orca will be in the list.

you did the same as others here did, you replaced the dummy files then compressed the folder. thats why its 1.9GB.. go back & start over again.
BEFORE you start #3, DO step#4. people cant read
4) Start FREEARC browse game's folder after installation, or directly from DVD9 select:
Choose either the already installed game folder OR direct from DVD9, start freearc compress the needed files THEN do step #3 ( replace dummy files )
then to step #5.

After reading through the autorun.dat it appears that the pakfiles folder actually belonges to Group3.cab from sequence 202-499 but I'm having trouble installing the game since the installer still askes for the pakfiles folder.
Should be quit easy:
Files in pakfiles root -> add Pakfiles to the beginning of every file.
Files in pakfiles Dir -> add PakfilesDir to the beginning of every file.
Files in pakfiles Drivers -> add PakfilesDrivers to the beginning of every file.
Files in pakfiles Tracks -> add PakfilesTracks to the beginning of every file.
Files in pakfiles Vehicles -> add PakfilesVehicles to the beginning of every file.
Put every files in the same folder and compress as Group3.cab
In autorun.dat under Media tab put Group3.cab in "DiskID 6 lastsequence 499"
In that way all the files resembles the files in Group6.cab since they (Group3) already exist in the .dat
Does anyone have any idea how to make this work??

Exactly!!!
I got this error.
"Error: The PhysX runtime redistributable package was not installed successfully. Setup cannot continue."
How to fix this?
The NFSS_arc.exe size is 1,615,774,244 bytes.
i gues 4 and 5 should be at number 3 and 3 should be second to the last

@peterf1999: It's worked for me on XP and Win7.
//Who can show me why it notice error on shift.exe when I start game on Win XP? I set up from original iso with same result. Update to patch 1.01, the same result too.
@peterf1999:
it worked for me on Win XP/Vista/7...thank u very much
could u share with us what changes u made in the .dat file as I'm new to all the msi editing and I'm liking it very much...if u cud share what u did here it would be very nice...thank you
also, what is the .dlt file and what is xdelta3.0???
Joe Forster/STA
04-12-2009, 12:03
what is xdelta3.0???
xdelta is a binary diff program, see here: http://xdelta.org.
ohh, so xdelta is a patching tool, right??
can anyone tell me exactly what this command does, i tried to find it online but couldn't!
xdelta3.0 -d -v -fs autorun.dat NFSS.dlt "autorun patched.dat"

ohh, so xdelta is a patching tool, right??
Right.
can anyone tell me exactly what this command does, i tried to find it online but couldn't!
xdelta3.0 -d -v -fs autorun.dat NFSS.dlt "autorun patched.dat"
Apply a patch (-d for decode) called "NFSS.dlt" (first filename = input) to "autorun.dat" (value of -s for source, not a stand-alone filename!), resulting in "autorun patched.dat" (last filename = output) which is to be overwritten (-f for force overwrite), and be verbose (-v for verbose) about the process.
(Yes, the command line syntax of this software is not trivial, it's somehow quite confusing...)
Thanks for clearing it out...but I still have doubts.
So, here, does the command decode "autorun.dat" or "nfss.dlt" ??
the source is "autorun.dat", i guess ??
what is the need to force overwrite the file, can't we just write it?
What is a .dlt file and how do we create it?

xdelta3.0 -e -fs oldfile newfile deltafile (create delta diff. bin file)
xdelta3.0 -d -fs oldfile deltafile newfile (apply the bin patch)
-f if it already present overwrite it
the source is always the oldfile
@peterf1999
Thank you very much, I now understood evrything and thanx for telling all the commands (now I can create patches too...yippee)
Also, I compared the patched file and the original file, but I didn't find a line that said to extract "NFSS_arc.exe"...all I could find was a line that was added to unpack an "exe".
I have attached the differences between both patched and original files.

i followed the instructions and compressed the game perfectly :)
but when i run the game and start a new career the nfs intro video keeps on repeating itself like a loop
is this an error in compression or is it an error in the crack file or what???
i am running windows 7 by the way

The end result of the DVD was even smaller :p
Sorry for the English decadent, I used the Google translator.
I don't see, how writing the steps in not exactly the same order, is changing the conversion itself? As I see it it didn't! Your compressing the same files, with the same compression method, followed by using the same files.
The steps or just marking what to do, for the conversion to work, and, witch thing to do one after the other it's just logical, don't You think, or do You disagree?

Instead of following the sequence 3 - 4 - 5 used 4 - 5 - 3.
i cant see the image attached between step 4 and 5.
