I've just ordered one of these from modchip-store.co.uk, i know these are compatible with a v4 ps2 which i have but, i was looking at install guides for it and theres either a "gap bios" guide or a "no gap bios" guide

make sure you solder a resistor across the power pad of the chip to the Ground pad of the chip. it speeds of boot time. i'll have to dig up info on what size the resistor was. i think 1k.

Correct - there are 2 types of BIOS on a v4 PS2 - Gap and No-Gap.

Essentially, a No-Gap BIOS looks like any standard BIOS chip from any other PS2. However, a gap BIOS has the pins in the centre missing from both sides, creating a 'gap' between the pins. The only way to tell is to open the PS2 and look at the BIOS chip itself. Then, use the corresponding diagram relating to your PS2...

As for the resistor between the Power and Ground - you are correct: it's 1k. :)

Should work straight out of the packet mate - no flash upgrades needed.
