You can't, if you can then I also would like to know. We only have SH-D162's and SH-W162's, which won't work with the firmware. Different regions get slightly different models. Also, all US shops that did have those drives are out of stock.
Ebay is your only way, which will no longer becomes " a cheap alternative". Sorry, I have been looking myself.

what happens if you could get another similar samsung drive to take the firmware?

It most likely won't work as the firmware that has been modified is built on the firmware for one model only. It would most likely ruin the drive...
They are still kinda easy to find here in europe though, if you care to look around a little... :D
UKers may want to look here for one - Mine's brill! :D

edit:
Regrettably iShopDirec is closed for business. The website will remain open for an extended period of time so that our
customers may access product information as well as their account information. However all products are currently unable to be purchased and will remain that way until the website is finally closed or sold.
We appreciate your business.
With Best Regards,
The iShopDirec Team

http://www.hktoyz.com is fairly new and the only method of payment is paypal, but I see the site posted in many places online so it seems as though they are becoming fairly large.

hmm, you are right .
I don't know of any other place in the US that has that drive. Ebay is probably your best bet, but will still end up going for around $60.
