I just don't get it. I have burned a dozen CDI games successfully,
as well as plenty of older non-CDI games. But in the cases of
Guilty Gear X and Bust-A-Move 4, the two games I tried which had
audio tracks, things have gone wrong.
I use an Athlon 1000, a super fast IDE drive (the fastest on the
market, I am told; it's not my PC), 256 megs of ram, nothing running in the background, no screenblanker. DiscJuggler (3.00.750)
recognizes the file and burns it. Nero recognizes the file converted
to .NGR, and burns it. Yes, I did remember to unpack and inject the
audio for Guilty Gear X. I have burned the games at 1x speed, and
utilized several option combinations in DiscJuggler's Advanced tab,
including the default and "Papa's" recommended settings (Mode1,
2336, CD-ROM, 0 offset). The results are totally identical, regardless
of how I ultimately burn the images.
Here is what happens:
Guilty Gear X: The intro animation plays music, but it does not flow
with the onscreen action, especially the title, and gets cut off quite
abruptly when the game moves on from the title screen. This leads
me to suspect the game is playing the wrong track. During the
various selection screens, it plays music.. I have no way of knowing
if it plays the correct music. Finally, whenever it gets to a point
where it's time to load up the graphical data for fights, the DC gets
stuck in a loading loop, easily identifiable by the repetition of specific
drive sounds. It does not recover.
Bust-A-Move 4: Every bit of music the game plays sounds misplaced
and tends to cut off abruptly. In fact, four out of five of the bits of
music were in fact the same five-second audio clip, as though the
game was getting confused and resorting to some default track.
Otherwise the game plays fine, at least insofar as I was willing to play
the game in its crippled state.
So basically, the problem seems to be that the audio tracks are being
written in a fashion that places them out of order, or out of sync, or
something similar. The cause of this problem is totally unknown. But
I can tell you what it is not:
It's not a problem with the rip. It's not a problem with the image files
(fully tested archives, never mind the overwhelming odds against my
having problems with only the CDDA games). It's not a problem with
my system, particularly in regards to hypothetical performance
inadequacy. It's not a problem with DiscJuggler or Nero; they burn other images perfectly. It's not a problem with unpack.exe or inject.exe; Bust-A-Move 4 did not require the use of those executables and it suffers from the same issues as Guilty Gear X.
You're probably thinking: It's your CDR drive. Possibly, but can you be more specific? I use a Mitsubishi (Panasonic) CW-7582. The
exact specifications of this drive can be found here:
http://www.panasonic.com/industrial_oem/computer/storage/cd-r/prods/current/7502.htm
It has no problem whatsoever burning images which include self-boot
information, and I even burned my boot disc with it. It has 1Mb of
buffer ram so some people are probably tempted to suggest that this
inadequacy is the cause of my problems. To those people, I feel the
need to stress a couple of facts: First, I am burning at 1x speed.
Second, my friends own - and I have used - CDR drives that are far
more outdated and have (I think) NO buffer ram, and they can burn
these images fine. Third, if it WERE an issue with buffer ram, then
wouldn't the results be somewhat random, rather than persistently
malfunctioning in the same exact fashion every time?
I suppose I'm hoping someone has an idea what could cause the CDDA
audio to be there (at all) but in the scrambled rendition I have gotten
a dozen times now. Remember, it's not a random mishap; the results
are identical every single time.
Many, many thanks in advance!
