My neighbor has a V5 with the no-solder/swap magic discs setup. This PS2 will not boot any dvd-r games anymore. It will boot original games though. When doing the swap method with the discs it seems that the PS2 takes forever to open/close the tray to exchange discs. What i also found out is that it will play dvd-r movies with out any problems. I posted a thread a while back on this and was suggested that it might be the lazer going out. But could it be the no-solder chip since it boots dvd-r movies? It would seem that if it boots the dvd-r movie it should boot the dvd-r game.

What version is the PS2?
This is a common misconception! Just because it reads DVD-R back-ups of movies has nothing to do with it being able to play PS2 games backed up to DVD-R's. DVD back-up movies have no protection to negotiate and will boot even if your laser is haveing some trouble most of the time. Now this is a whole different story with PS2 games back-ups. If your laser is having trouble to begin with and you try and boot a PS2 game back-up there is protection schemes that even the swap magic crap will have to negotiate and if the laser is taking too long to boot the games you will get an RSOD. This also applies to a PS2 having laser issues and a no swap solder mod.
