I recently encountered problems backing up 2 DVD's.
The movies are "The Missing" and "Gothica" , both from Col.Tristar, both red DVD's.
I gots a Pioneer Reader and a Philips Burner, both drives cant read the same VTS file.
I tried to backup my DVD's using anyDVD, DVDxcopyPlatinum, and DVD Decrypter...they all get stuck on read errors on the same VTS.
The problem only occurs on these releases...I can backup all the other movies so far...
Any suggestions?

OK, already for people who dont do searches. Im gonna stick this. There is a new protection. BUT it has been beaten by the latest version of ANYDVD at least from v3.9.2.1 and up.
I have Gothika and had no problems with it before I updated to the newer versions of Anydvd. I dont know about the other movie you have.

I been using ANYDVD 2.0.0.4...I will upgrade and try again, thanks :o
I own both of these movie's and backed both up with dvd decrypter and dvd2one. Is this new protection limited to the UK only??

Weve got it too Warlock. I dont keep up with DVDDecrypter so Im not sure if the newer versions can rip these movies as well.

what exactly do you mean by red dvds? and the bottoms red or is the protection called red or something?
I used DVDDecripter 3.5.1.0 and Instant Copy 8 to do "The Missing". No problems. Same as any other movie.
Is this problem a European PAL version thing?

Supposedly its NTSC and PAL. Ive seen users from both sides of the globe complain about it. But all they have to do is update their programs and it should be fine. At least until different variations of this protection come out.

To answer a prev. Question: Both DVDs are red (color) and some drives have problems with that, but not mine.
Anyways I updated both, AnyDVD and DVDDecrypter (3.5.1.0).
I was able to backup the movie "The Missing" which is an older release.
Gothika still wont work.
I used AnyDVD in the background and got all files onto the HDD, however DVDShrink 3.2 and Nero 6.3 cant compress the files onto a DVD.
Nero just crashes and so does DVD2One. DVDShrink asks for a VTS file thats not even on the original DVD ( Vts_07_6.vob).
Nero wont access the DVD at all despite AnyDVD running.

I think you may have a bad original. You may have to get another. Ive had bad originals before too.

How did you realize the original was screwed up?
And how did you manage to do a backup of Gothika?
From your postings I would assume you been using AnyDVD to backup to HDD and then Nero to compress and copy onto DVD?
Or did you use Nero to backup directly from the original?
Im just asking all that because I already took back one DVD to the store and got the problems with the second one too.

I dunno where you got the idea that I used nero at all. I never use nero, I hate it.
All I use is Anydvd and CloneDVD2. I personally fluxuate between reading/compressing on the fly and reading/compressing to a folder in my hdd. I almost always use CloneDVD2 to burn my ISO's or Folders to dvd without problems or hassles.
As for a bad disc, after not being able to back it up I returned it to my local dvd store for a replacement of the same movie. Most stores will at least allow that for an opened package. Afterwards I was easily able to back up the replacement without problem. So like I said some discs can be bad.
In one case I actually had a PS1 game that had a warp on the disc. It reaked havok on my drive. I just threw that one away.

A warp on the disc  !!! With those drive speeds thats like shoving a frag grenade into the comp!!! OMG! LOL!!
Well imma try and get another DVD and I also will try ISO for the DVD though I only been using ISO for PS backups so far.
COOL!!! Thanks for the assistance :)
Hi Guyz AND Gals
Just copied uk-pal Gothica
Used DVDshrink 3.2 to 'organise' wants
Used Stomp record now max to burn
Ritek g04 dye - datawrite dvd-r
pioneer a06
and no probs - worked a treat
AND yes I did notice the origiinal was a red faced dvd
But didnt give that a thought - cant see that being a protection - but then i'm just a mere mortal
So WHAT IS THIS RCE
regards

I've been using DVD Decrypter and have never had a problem decrypting anything... until Band of Brothers.
The 'special' metal boxed set with 6 DVDs.
On the second DVD (which has 2 episodes) on vob 4, DVD Decrypter would hang with a strange 'servo' error message.
It would happen both on my XP Pro SP1 system with an NEC ND 2500 burner and on my girlfriend's XP Home SP2 system with an older Pioneer 16X DVD-ROM.
I promptly downloaded AnyDVD and tried it again on both systems and got the same hang and error message.
Not one to take defeat lightly, since I'd made my girlfriend's system a dual-boot with XP and Windows 98 SE, I rebooted into Windows 98, installed AnyDVD and tried again.
It decrypted with no issues whatsoever!! (And also burned with no problem back in Windows XP)
Whatever the new copy protection is, it seems to be effective in Windows XP but doesn't work in Windows 98.
I hope that by posting this, I'll help someone else get over a decryption hang issue.
Often there's several names on the original dvd and if Sony is one of them, then you would need the latest anydvd runing in the background before decrypter and shrink or whatever is used.

Wow, i thought i was the only one having this problem. After i successfully copied the 1st disc using DVDshrink, i get that same "servo" error msg on the 2nd disc. I then tried using AnyDVD but got a similar error msg. If you say it works with Win98 then i guess that's my only alternative for now... ugh, that means i have to dig out one of my old drives and install Win98 just to burn this particular disc.. what a drag! lol.
But what i want to know is, if this is in fact a "new" copy protection on the disc, then how come it's only on disc 2? I've successfully copied all the others (discs 1,3,4,5,6) but not disc 2. WEIRD!
But thanx for your post!
@squarepants420: You revived a 1,5 years old thread !!!
If you have problems copying DVD-Movies, simply use the newest version AnyDVD (by Slysoft).

Yes, i realized i resurrected an old thread, however i'm just now copying Band of Brothers because i haven't seen it yet.. so i'm borrowing my friend's Box set after recommendations to see it.
And i am using the latest version of AnyDVD (ver. 6.1.4.3) and still no success. Any other alternatives that you know of?... if so, please share the info. Thanx :)
@squarepants420
so i'm borrowing my friend's Box set
