as in terms of influence, thru technical innovation, design, storyline, an concept.
The game genres are mixed to show variety.

I said doom because it was probably the most popular "revolutionary" game ever. RE started the popularity of the survival games. So that would be my second choice. I didn't know outrun was for the PC, but it was the first online console game to have more than "death matches" in fps, and added a little more strategy to multiplayer.
Zelda...pc?
XWing
One of the first games to be CD-Rom only!
But the problem most of em have loads of influence in their own genre, like, command and conquer was the RTS killer!, and doom the innovating fps, so u cant really choose
That List Sucks!!!!
Only two games deserve to be there, Outrun and Elite
Off the top of my head, the most influential games have been:
Super Mario Bros. (every platformer since this game has used it as a template)
Super Mario Kart (invented a new genre, with ease. that was ****ing rare in the mid 90s, and even more so now)
Yie Ar Kung Fu
IK+
Gran Turismo
Virtua Fighter (reinvented and rejuvenated the 1 on 1 beat em up genre)
Sensible World of Soccer (actually any Sensible Software should go on this list, like Cannon Fodder)
FIFA International Soccer (started the licensing craze)
Green Beret
Double Dragon
WipeOUT (in my opinion, this is the game that killed the Sega Saturn in Europe. Deserves to be on the list because of that)
The Great Escape (this used stealth while Hideo Kojima was still jacking off to tentacle porn in his parents basement. They do have basements over there in Japan, right?)
Championship Manager (stats, stats and more stats. Theres a football game in there too, but I have yet to find it)
Half-Life (had to make the list, **** DOOM. I never played DOOM during its original run. Run and Gun games are so ****ing lame. Got this game when I first got a PC back in 2000. Was ****ing blown away by the graphics. Then I relised I was playing in Software Mode  Anyways, every single FPS, including Deus EX, have at least 'borrowed' a few of Valve Software's ideas.)
Most games of today, owe their exsistence to the above titles :D
In terms of being a real killer app, in my opinion, only Gran Turismo qualifies for that title. Basically told every other race 'em up to go **** themselves when it first came about on the PS1. Now every other racing game tries its damn hardest to copy it. Instead of Polyphony/SONY having to pay manufacturers to put their cars in there, its rumoured that some of them actually now pay SONY to stick their cars in there. Thats how big that game is. Genuine mainstream appeal too. Unlike 99% of the crap out there. How XboX fanboys put MSR/PGR over it I dont know. Get a clue. Special mentions for Yie Ar Kung Fu, IK+ and Way of the Exploding Fist. Streetfighter II stole all their ideas ;)
Could throw a few more titles on there, but **** that ****. Also, notice no RPG or RTS or other beardfest genres make the list? I have a life. I enjoy it.
yeah the point is BW, that if it wasnt for doom, hl wouldnt be what it is. As doom started the fps movement.
DOOM started the FPS movement? I thought Wolfenstein is classed as the granddaddy of all FPS's? Thats the one that got the ball rolling. Although it still wasnt the first FPS. Cant rememeber the name of that.
SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE SHENMUE :D - God i love that game :D

For me, the list of significant computer games would be
DOOM - the grand daddy of fps (along with Wolfenstien 3D)
Command & Conquer - started the RTS craze
Super Mario Bros - Say hello to one of the greatest adventure type games of all time
Gran Turismo - re-define the driving game scene and now everybody wants to beat them
Championship Manager - spent countless hours looking at stats and more stats
Madden NFL Football - this is the start of the greatest gaming franchise
others are
IK+
Double Dragon
FIFA Series
BW, yeah but Wofl3d never really made it big besides it was freeware if i dont remember wrong, the fact later on you could buy extra episodes is a different matter, in any case it was doom that really started the whole walk shoot find card open door thing.
Luciel, i'll give you that. I never played DOOM during its original run on the PC so I cant really comment on how significant it really was ;) I played it on the various consoles that the game got ported too. I personally thought it was all hype.
I still think that list at the top sucks. I mean why is Resident Evil there? Resident Evil blatently ripped off the Alone in the Dark games.
i agree with u BW that this list is crap really...

I completely forgot about alone in the dark, of course, I haven't played it much.
I really liked phantasmagoria, but it has been years since I played it, probably when it came out. Was really easy though, could almost beat the game in a day. It had actors instead of sprites for characters, so that was something that was popluar back when.

Some might say the top-10 games you or others may list, blatantly ripped off earlier similar games, as ideas tend to be copied.
an as for asking why is 'resident evil' there - the fact it generated 2 big movies when similar games didnt, clearly demonstrates its significance.
ps- i do agree with you about 'elite' - tho oddly no ones voted for it!

Wolfenstein was definately the granddaddy of FPS no doubt about it. Doom came sometime after. As for Doom 3, pah! What is the fuss all about. Absolutely nothing new, If I want only wish to see spectacular graphics, I'll watch a dvd.
Best FPS of all time has got to go to Devastation in my book, the godfather of FPS, though the likes of Pain killer, farcray and Serious Sam, (I know it didn't offer much more than see it shoot it, but what a game) follow closely.
Comanche gold, Delta force, Half life, Vice city, Mafia, saga rally, tetris, Lemmings and Unreal, Sim city and of course The sims.
Devastation!?!?!?!?!? dude... u seriously need a gaming taste, THE AI WAS HORRIBLE and was tottally full of bugs, might have a cool story but thats about it

LOL, I didn't really notice to many bugs and to be honest the Single player mode was not my favorite. But When it came to onlining.... whoa! Serious business.

this got me thinking, as to what game engine has the best AI programing etc.
i reckon its 'Blimey-2' by Climax who made warcraft an diablo.

Champ manager series from the amiga days to present. I blame my bunking off school on this. Might consider a law suit against them!! (only kidding) They have given me too much pleasure for me to do that.
I think the best AI was in Black and White, which degraded into potty training
There were bots for quake1 (omicron:D) that had very advanced learning AI
PS: is this a 3 month old thread?
I can't believe you guys left out Quake 1. Quake 1, ie classic quake, had a HUGE impact on the pc world. Where would COUNTERSTRIKE, Day of defeat, and every other mod be without quake starting the mod revolution? The console!! what game these days doesn't have a console! since when could you completely redesign a game and make a flight sim, an rts, or a racing game-- which the developer actualy supported doing?
Not to mention Quake being the first game to incorporate a fully three dimensional environment, unlike doom and duke3d where you couldn't actualy look up and down without it being distorted, or actualy have a level with multiple floors. And quake first started using polygons instead of sprites for models.
And how about internet play? all games before quake used IPX, which is only for LAN play, unless you wanted to buy kali. Quake really set the standard for playing through TCP/IP, and was the first fps game to actualy have big turnaments played on, and "professional gamers" how silly it might be.
I don't doubt that there are other games worth noting, but you HAVE to give quake credit! It was such a big milestone!!
And I also have to give tons of credit to blizzard. The warcraft(I donno if warcraft was before c&c) series and Diablo really boomed two different types of games, and that's freaken innovative!
Dune 2 is the first RTS ... by westwood..
Blizzard was next with warcraft.. which added "groups" and a bunch of other stuff.. (yeah u couldnt select 2 units in dune2 AFAIK .. i remember lining up my units in a huge line and then clicking each one .. pressing M and then clicking somewhere on the map so that the lined moved .. one by one)
C&C came after by westwood.. for the sole reason that the Dune license was limited to 2 games.. (C&C is basically dune3)
then starcraft .. again by blizzard ...
I'm not mentioning sequels because i really dont remember when warcraft 2 and stuff came out..
but yeah .. quake1 was huge.. i was big into console manipulation and making mods with quakec... maps that had "brushes" just because quake didnt have concave 3D objects.. (you had to break it down to convex objects called "brushes")
We just played medal of honor multiplayer and i used my console skills there too :)
edit: I should have said dune2 was my first RTS :)
efess, although ur right about quake being the first full 3d game, doom 2 and duke 3d did have several floors in one level...
and also ipx wanst the only online mode, you could dial directly into someone elses modem phone.
tbaher, yes the first rts was dune, and then warcraft, but what really shooted rts skyhigh was c&c :)
I think the most significant RTS is StarCraft. Why? Becouse StarCraft made the second revolution in the RTS genre, and nobody made game ever since that can beat it. They play it on WCG! There are so many RTSs around, and they play StarCraft on WCG. I think that's a game worthy of significance.
I think Warcraft 3 f*cked the whole genre for implementing heroes in the gameplay. Apparently you could beat the missions without strategy, if you had a strong hero. A strategy game without strategy. And the gaming industry just kept releasing games like this named RTS. Discusting.... :(
And Doom, yeah, that was a great game. I remember playing it with friend in hot-seat mode :D for days. But the all-time favorite is Duke Nukem 3D!!! :D
Nothing is comperable to "Hail to the king, baby!" :D
Dune 2 is the first RTS ... by westwood..
Not true :P
There was an amiga game that was first with RTS's forgot its name now :P
Im suprised no-one voted for elite, it was a phenomenal game. Huge game and was the first true space flight sim.
But then again I think most people arent old enough to remember it lol

wrong! i remember elite and played it too. Yeah, that was the first space simulation, but I prefer Freelancer :D
I still think you left StarCraft from that list...
freelancer is definetly a worthy succesor to elite even if they have no relation, and dab, that mightve been strategy, (turn based) but the technology for REAL time strategy was non existant b4 dune2

i pasted this below from a historical game site, which listed old game companies from Britain an their achievements...
"Incentive is arguably the world's first 3D-only computer games developer - long before id's phenomenal success of Wolfenstein 3D, Incentive forged ahead with their revolutionary but overlooked 3D engine (called "FreeScape") that offer smooth movement, great graphics and level design for its time that is a far cry from Wolfenstein's blocky layout, and innovative mouse-based gameplay."
their notable games - Castle Master, The Dark Side, Total Eclipse
