i recently replaced the music adx's in a selfboot copy of MVC2 that i know
to work and when i try to make it selfboot again, i get as far as the SEGA logo,
then it kicks me back to the dreamcast screen. I assume this means that ip.bin
is loading, but 1st_read isn't. I have had the same results using the ESCHELON
method as well as the bin2boot method.

Is there some extra step i have to take since the bins are from a previously selfbooting game?

I can only assume that the problem is with the offset of my 1st_read.bin, but -msinfo spits out 11702, just like everyone says it should.

I am desperate, so if you don't help me, one of the hostages is going to get it!

did you binhack the 1st_read.bin?

post your steps in detail.....

Yes i binhacked to 11702, just like i was supposed to, but to no avail.
also, like i said, the bin2boot method gives me the exact same results.

It's possible that 1st_read.bin DOES load, but immediately crashes back to the DC BIOS menu. The reason is that it plays an intro sequence and uses one of the ADX (that is, BIN) files for background music. If that ADX is incorrectly encoded - wham, crash. Something similar happened to me, and I had to go back and re-encode one file to .adx, then testplay each and every one of them to be absolutely sure they were OK. Once I reburned the game afterward, it worked fine. So look into that... ;)
