Games Are For Kids, hmmm, yeah especially the "M" rated ones. ;)
Tyler!
Yeah well u see this is the whole problem of society, mum goes into the local game shop, and buys max payne, manhount or gta for her 13 year old kid, the age thingis are there for a reason and if a game is mature rating like max payne for the amount of violence or/and reference or actions of sex wich are not suitable for a 13 year old kid, most of u might think its a stupid thing this, but its how it is, and sometimes people should think about this.
No No No, this thread should not go down the route of kids should not be playing adult themed games (like GTA and Tellitubbies). What I meant was should adults, like me, still be playing with toys? (Video Games, consoles etc). Should only kids be allowed to enjoy Video Games?
Still a good point, Luciel.
well of course adults should play bounty, after all, its adults making the games rite? john carmack is an adult, yet he made the doom trilogy :) besides, its always good to go and play an online game with a 30 year old guy or woman that doesnt call u a cheater every time u kill them precisely cos they are not kids. So yeah U SHOULD besides im telling you GO KILL PEOPLE ONLINE NOW!!!! :P
Ok, what if I have now lost all interest in videogames. Is there anyway to get my enthusiasm back? Which is why I go back to my original statement, GAMES ARE FOR KIDS..
Once I feel you reach a certain age, you relise how fruitless and boring playing games really is. I'm still amazed there are people on here aged 40+ who still play games. How do YOU people do it? What motivates you?
well bounty, hm, i suppose everyone has a passion, and some passions dont die, my father is in the computer business so cos of that ive been into games since i was 5, with the likes of lemmings and aqualung or micemen and blues brothers, so the passion grows i suppose, i suppose what you need to do, is go to a big games store, not one that has a small pc section with only the known stuff, have a big look spend ur time, and eventually ull come with something new, and lately theres loads of new ideas coming out, yesterday for example i bought upling, such a simple game, no complicated graphics, yet so addictive and well made. So think about it, give the games another chance, BUT stick to pc ;) if u need any personal recommendation ill be glad to add u to my msn, since i get them free from my dads shop so i try mostly every game, see you around bounty.
Been playing games since I was around 3/4 years old. Now, 20 years later, I have come to relise that games are still the same now as they were back then. Despite what Graphics Whores tell ya. Been no geniune innovation for a long time. Although that Eye Toy thiniemejig is good for a laugh :p Which is what playing games should be all about. Having a Laugh. Not wasting 100 hours just to level up your character in some generic RPG. Wheres the fun in that? Sony killed it, I tell ya.
yeah ive always disliked final fantasy and the likes, what ever happened to good 'ol table rol? thats why i dont play that kinda games, i spend my time trying to figure how can i play wiht my neighbou C&C the original over modem, problem is i dont have a modem i have broadband, but im getting one so we can play direct call :)
Hehe, always hated those C&C Games with a passion. Perhaps because they have always been too hard for me. When I said 'Sony Killed It' I meant the Games Industry in General :p
ahaha C&C was hard but i just had to defeat the evil kane!!! didnt got further than level 13 it was just so annoying but hey. I feel like playing day of the tentacle and discworld, they were rlly the only adventure games that entertained me, broken sword was just to boring :P

Well, times change. The generations will probably be a little more stricter as time goes by, since the younger adult audiance know how games can be.
I mean, when kid's parents had games on nintendos in the late 80's/earlt 90's, and lose interest, the image of those "harmless" games stick with them. I know alot of adults in their late twenty's and early 30's that don't play games. And to know how much violence are in games, you would have to play them (aside from the news from time to time). When violent games are bought for their children, they usually don't watch them to play it long enouph to know how violent or how adult themed it may be.
Yes, the ratings are there, but parents do ignore them. And refering to my first paragraph, the ratings won't be ignored as much in the future. The people buying them for their children, are also going to be buying games for themselves. They know how much the violence and sex reference would have evolved.
I think the whole Games Industry is pretty stagnant at the moment, theres no truely 'amazing' games or genres left to develop. Even on the so called 'Next Generation' Platforms that are coming up in the next 2 years or so its going to be the same old tired Franchises that will be the selling points for the the respective Consoles/PC. Hence, once you played one Pro Evo, Gran Turismo, FPS or, ermmm, Tomb Raider you have played them all. Thats why only kids will get enjoyment out of any these 'new' titles.
GAMES ARE FOR KIDS, ADMIT IT!
now now bounty, u cant say doom 3 is like its predecessors can ya :)
DOOM 3 will be all graphics and no gameplay. Mark My Words!

But what keeps it going is that only a few good games are released every year. Not every game is the same. I mean once you play one fps, that doesn't mean you've played em all.
For example, how about that robocop? I don't know anyone who bought that game, yet, other fps are bought by my friends all the time. Why? Well, because robcop sucked. They genre may stay the same, but gameplay changes all the time.
Games are for those that enjoy them. In the past I would think they were meant to be for kids, but now developers are trying to get games to appeal for the older audiance, which they have and always will do. Some lose interest, some don't.

HAHAHAHAHA! What a topic to have started on GCW, the center point of almost every gamer in this world lol.
Yes Bounty I am prolly the biggest Graphics whore this world has ever seen, and I think I deserve to have my cake now, and eat it.
I have been waiting for my whole life to get the eyecandy into my gaming world (38 now) But sadly yes, I do have to agree with you about the same old gameplay in nearly every new game release.
BF1942, GTA vice and a few others have stepped out of the first person shooter syndrome to include the use of vehicles, this is good and gives the gamer some variation. But the kill, kiss or trade with em' style of game is still very much the same. Hmm there is a game that does change the rules a bit and i'll just type hint here --- Postman with a black coat lol. Not for the kiddies.
MA+ rated Gaming is most definately designed for older kids like us and then its up to us, the parents to decide the viewing for our kids. I would never let my 6 & 11 yo girls play GTA vice without me present - they drive around in the cars and bikes but do not play the story line. Then they go play Zelda and decapitate a creature or two lol.
Just my thoughts - every one has thier own gmaing view I suppose.

mwahahaha postal 2!!!! poor petrol on someone, get the matches, and then out of my good heart i piss on em to get rid of the flames MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA :P BRILLIANT!

I found postal 2 the worst game I've ever played. Other than the long walks with no action and long loading times, the game is the most boring and repetative swarm of crap I've ever played. not to mention the shotty graphics. Went to IGN and they pointed out everything I hated about the game specifically.
1. bought game
2. installed game
3. played game for 2 hours
4. Unistalled game
5. Give to friend for free (even a dollar would be ripping him off)
the long loading times are fixed with the 1.1 patch... and i kinda trust pcgamer reviews more than u and they gave em 75 wich in pcgamer is a very good mark so yeah, and i dont regret buying it
Postals' 2 features are funny, but only once. After you've tried everything this game is simply boring.

yah, when I first got it, i was just lighting people on fie and pissing on em. Then played catch with the dog (using a head) for a while.
Anyways, after I got to the "cash check" part, the game completely sucked. After standing in line for 15 minutes because it kept glitching out or something. The banker kept telling me to go to the end of the line over and over when I finally got up to the counter. Had to stand in line around 6 times.
After I got to that part, the bank gets robbed. I either had to sit there forever and wait until it was resolved, or try and stop them...which the police would then go after me instead of them if I did. The game wasn't worth that much of a hassle, since the market was just the same as the bank. Plus the random back shots from the amazing appearing rioters. (I admit though, the restroom was pretty funny)
Postal 2 = ****e
Absolute ****e
Aimed At Kids
Hence
GAMES ARE FOR KIDS!
Quall999
05-04-2004, 09:48
Postal 2 cannot even be considered a game. It's so horrible. I have to admit though, I don't know many people over 30 that play games. So, I guess if you consider anyone in their 20's a kid still, i'd have to agree.
I can honestly say that in 10 years, I probably won't play game nearly as much. But I still don't think all games are meant for kids.

OMFG! what a nasty topic this has turned into lol.
Qual, in 10 years you will be playing twice as many games because;
1. The money will be in greater abundance at that age.
2. You will be way to hooked to give the habbit away.
3. 4 out of 5 households will own a PC and 'gaming' will be the worlds favorite lesure time.
4. When your 30, you will see the world through a 30 year old's eyes, this will change everything that you are - attitude towards older people included.
I played postal2 through and had no probs in the bank, no glitches with the game play(after the patch) and found many ways to get through a level --- like walking on powerlines etc.
However, the game has no replay value and the mod's available are not worth a complete replay. But the pure sickness of this game compelled me to buy it anyway. lol.
To finalise my comment, I do think games are for kids BUT! only the ones that are rated so. If the game is rated MA-15+ or R, then the target audience was never intended for children.
My local game retailer & game hire store ask for ID to rent out any MA or R material - I was very pleased with that attitude.
Ps. Ive been playing heaps of online' Freelancer lately, not bad - any comments? Post away lol.

I might play a game once a week, now. The only game I can see myslef play in the future are multiplayer online fps's, or rpgs. There are only a hand full of rpg's that I will play.

I personally am one of the elders of these forums and I dont feel insecure in saying that I like to play console games and the occasional PC game. I like games that have good stories (like some RPG's) and I also enjoy seeing what this particular year has brought to us with graphics.
I have also found that PS2/Xbox Parties are always great fun. Especially with a seemingly endless supply of beer. Mix in a nice BBQ and your all set.
I kinda get the feelin that maybe Bounty's wife or girlfriend may have a hand in his sudden change of heart. If not, then do as you like man, but I dont think your right.

Maybe theres a way to somehow combine the two?
And Warlock, people older then 30 only play Videogames because they are trying to look cool or are just trying to recapture their youth. Midlife crisis or something. Ask Rince, he will tell you ;)

Uhh, Bounty, I am 37, Thats right, 37. Personally I could care less about looking cool to any young punk, guy or gal, and wouldnt trade one of my 37 years for nothing. I'm sucessful, retired from the Army now operating a Construction business here in Georgia, I've got more pussy on accident than most of you will ever get on purpose so there's no midlife crisis here ;) . I play games for pure enjoyment. It helps me relax as well as lets me spend more time with my kids. Now its none of my business, but if you have gotten involved with a girl that makes fun of you for playing video games, tells you you are to old, says you are a big kid or wants to change you from yourself to something you are not then maybe SHE is the problem and you should drop her instead of gaming.
Woah, Woah, WOAH... Easy Tiger. Seems I hit a sore spot about the age thing there. HMMMMM
And the last thing about dropping some lovin in favour of games? What the hell is that, man? Go wash your mouth. With SOAP!

LOL this thread has become very interesting;
1: Hm combining the 2... u could always play a porn game although they tend to be ammazingly BAD!
2: To the dude that said abotu freelancer, i enyoed every second of the game, great storyline too!
3: Games are NOT only for kids, games are for everyone who wants them, i agree with the relaxing bit, when im angry or down, a game of quake 3 always helps.

This reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where George combines sex and eating. Eventually everytime he ate outside of xex he wound up gettin flushed. :p
So I would think that if you did combine gaming and your lady, you may wanna watch out when you game by yourself. Lotion and the PS2 controller dont mix.

AOL study shows middle-aged females spend the most time playing on the Web.
Internet service provider AOL, once-parent and now-child of multimedia multinational Time Warner, released a study yesterday about the demographics of overall online gaming. According to the study, women over the age of 40 spend the most time of any demographic group playing games online.
AOL said women over the age of 40 spend nearly 50 percent more time each week playing online games than men, and play online games on a daily basis more often than men or younger gamers. The fortysomethings' genre of choice was puzzle and word games, and their favorite time to play was between Midnight and 5 a.m.
Another finding was 44 percent of the 40-plus women surveyed often forwent reading, exercise, and watching TV or movies in order to play games. Of those women who forged new friendships while playing, 20 percent said their friendships extended into the offline world.
Maybe this is some good info :p

It's a common misconception that games are for kids. First of all, many games are way too mature for kids to handle. Second, kids are morons. Really. I rest my case.

NEW YORK - All those years on the couch playing Nintendo and PlayStation appear to be paying off for surgeons. Researchers found that doctors who spent at least three hours a week playing video games made about 37 percent fewer mistakes in laparoscopic surgery and performed the task 27 percent faster than their counterparts who did not play video games.

It has nothing to do with wheither or not he can beat you in a console game. It's just the way of handling with the analog buttons is about the same as the tools they use. I just wanted to point it out that it's usefull for surgeons too.
I think getting married is one of the biggest hits your gaming life takes, even if you get a wife who likes games. You have less time to do everything, you have a certain kind of duty to your family, etc... if your wife likes games and you have one PC (or console), you have a sort of power-struggle whenever you can't play together.
Now my wife hated computers (and i'm a software developer, heh) but gradually started using them and thus liking them. Getting her into playing games was tricky at first, as she would consider the huge amount of time I sat there playing games was like "watching the game" i.e. ignoring her and concentrating in something so much that you can barely have a conversation.
But then I got her into adventure games through licensed games - took her to a game store with me and she spotted this Law & Order game and I was all like "Licensed games usually stink" and we eventually bought it.
See, I grew up playing with my sister, with my sister sitting on the passenger seat, spotting things, linking facts, being my "navigator" etc.
My wife on the other hand is just like me, someone who wants to be in control. Control struggles ensue. But I digress.
We then played some games that I knew were great adventure games, Longest Journey and Runaway. The point was to get her into games that didn't make her feel like she was pressed for time or anything, and that would not be frowned upon as being too "mindless", and hey .. adventure games are a dying genre now, but I grew up playing Sierra's "quest" games.
So anyway, the next step was for her to play Rayman 3, and this was VERY hard for someone who never played a videogame before (no hand-eye coordination yet) and she got halfway through it and then it got too hard, BUT she wanted ME to play so that she can see the rest of the story.
The WHOLE point I'm trying to make is that if you've lost interest in games, feel like you don't wanna play games, or think that games arent what they used to be, then you're playing some kind of games that you don't like. There is a kind of game for EVERYONE. I hated strategy games without realizing it (i used to love dune2 when it first came out and thus C&C afterwards) and at one point I just didn't wanna play these kinds of games anymore. But then I decided that I hate strategy games and will not even try to play because I don't have fun playing them. It's that simple. Find something you have fun playing, don't feel pressured to play a certain kind of game or a game everyone likes. Just try to have fun.
If you already thought about it and you think there's any kind of game you like then you haven't tried the one you like yet. Talk to mature people, someone who actually plays a lot of different kinds of games about what you hate in a certain game and they will guide you to the exact opposite.
Example I like story
Strategy games can get too "concentrate-y"
RPGs can get boring (especially ones that don't have a story, read: diablo)
Shooters are ok because I am good at them (multiplayer)
Platformers are ... well .. it has to be funny for me to enjoy it (Conker's Bad Fur Day.. )
Adventure games are all about story, I mean the old-skool adventure games, not puzzle-games like Myst. Too bad they don't make them as much as they used to. (if at all)
Sports games are weird in that good games are good and bad games will make you hate all games that are based on the same sport. I didn't even watch football and wasn't interested in sports, but then I played Madden NFL 2003 and suddenly I'm watching Packers games. Needless to say I got 2004 even though it's an 80% waste of money (should be VERY cheap if you have the last game since it's almost like an expansion)
Tony Hawk 2 gave me my childhood dream of skateboarding. (also got 3 and 4 .. less of a waste of money)
This post is too long.
(I respect other people's tastes in game genres and if you feel offended in any way at my comments on what games I like or don't like, PM me with your abuse, don't start a flame war, thanks)

Here's somthing I forgot to say (mods: or do I edit to make the post longer than it already is).
My wife actually said that playing Rayman 3 actually made her hand-eye coordination better. If you've been to a country where driving resembles walking on a big-city-downtown-sidewalk (no lanes, no order, ok to pass on whichever side, ok to go faster no matter where in the road you're in, no speed limit except on highways, jaywalking is ok, CHAOS (http://www.touregypt.net/magazine/mag08012000/mag6.htm)) You'll know why she said so while we're driving in Cairo, Egypt and some guy (pedestrian) pops outta nowhere.

But on a serious note, I don't fully agree with your marriage view that you get less time for gaming, not all of us fall under the thumb after the knot is tied. I play like a little child, even stamp my feet lol and my wifey just looks at me and pisses her self laughing, calls me a twit and walks away lol. She plays computer games now but very few, and still can't use the pc properly, but she knows its my thing and is happy to let me be. I would not have married a woman that chained me down, I don't cheat, do drugs, drink heavy or abuse her and that my friends makes her a very happy lady. - Happiness leads to Horniness lol.

Video games are absolutely amazing. Their range is so incredibly wide that one is hard-pressed not to find something to enjoy. I taught senior citizens intro computer skills one summer at a senior center. Some surprised me by asking for help navigating to games. Sure, they weren't looking for the latest Unreal Tournament, but diversity of options is my point. Among the many entertaining things to do in your free time, video games can be challenging, dexterity-improving (for all you surgeons), and extremely fun! Children to adults of all ages (I feel like a ringmaster at a circus) have much to choose from. I feel the same way about cartoons, but that's another topic.

CONGRATS! BountyWarrior well done m8.
I hope you have many happiness moments lol.
I'm fast approaching my 5th wed aniversary 30th/10 and we have had only two fights, and they turned out to be just silly lol.
Our trick is to agree to disagree, it always works. You see, these days we pride ourselves on our opinions and if that view is different than anothers, it will most probably lead to a conflict. So my wifey and I just walk off seperate ways calling each other 'bitch' & 'bastard' lol - then have a cuddle later when nothin's on the tv. It's fool proof. ;)

For what? I aint walking down no aisle yet. I aint ready for such a big step.
It IS a big step indeed and I seem to have rushed into it for better or for worse (got married when I was 22).
Turned out not to be as bad as I thought it would be, but then again there are thing you just won't see coming.
Pressure can really ruin your decision, and yet indecision can get you sacked.
Make sure you did all you ever wanted to do (single-wise) before you get married because it's like a permanent gf/roomie.
Oh well one thing I'm never gonna get done with anytime soon is playing games, and this is the thing I miss most.
Stay with her as long as possible before getting married, preferably living together too (customs/religion permitting).
Gives you more of an idea of what you're up against.

DOOM 3 will be all graphics and no gameplay. Mark My Words!
bounty, u also told me the same about FarCry ;)
u know doom 3 will kick ass...
btw, "Mark My Words", u said to me i should also mark the year 2010, u prolly remember :D
Not long ago, I felt the same way JoyBoy did and to a certain extent I still do regarding most console games, but after playing Doom3 and Halflife2, my excitement for 1st person shooters has returned. With these games we have a fully emersive, cinematic experience that goes beyond the graphics. Computer AI has improved to the extent that you sometimes find yourself having to use strategy to make it through a first person shooter. That, IMHO, is improved gameplay.

The computer games industry goes into stagnation every now and then. The sheer amount of cloned titles of pacman, space invaders etc. is testament to the lack of originality you need in this business. I've seen some pretty unique titles in my time but you can stake your life on it that there will be a lot of similar games on the bandwagon as soon as it has been released. Doom 3 doesn't really look like it's predecessors but it looks uncannily like every other FPS that's around at the moment - the same with Quake 4.
I've long ago become bored with mindless shooters, they seem to have too much lineararity to them. Call of Duty looked impressive... until I realised the instructions you had to follow meant there cannot be much deviation from the path you had to take. On the other side of the coin you had Freelancer which allowed you to go anywhere, do anything and become whatever you chose to be (except a blond guy in brown leather :) ). This game was fantastic when I first came across it and many of my friends bought the game so we could multiplay and have fun.... but after a while I realised you were still restricted to that galaxy, those commodities etc.
So it doesn't really matter what genre of games you like, you WILL get bored with what's on offer at some point, but I've always noticed you get the kick back again when you find the right game.
This post is well too long already but I just have to disagree with games just being for kids. I was 8 when I started out with a ZX Spectrum 48k and I'm still here even though my social life is pretty good. I just think that adults have too much to deal with and cannot afford the time to sit around playing games.
Bit of an old thread resurrection...
