I was wonderinf what kind of media does the gamecube use? Is it a small-DVD or a special disk?

I also need to know how to make my computer be able to read the disk. I do not intend on making illegal copies since this is for a prefectly legal copy of my friend's disk to replace my scratched up disk (blame it on my 2-year old sister who thinks that sisors and disks go together)

I think I've read somewhere that it is not possible to read the GC DVDs in your PC DVD drive. But u can do images, if u use PSO + BBA + cbs-Phoenix161 or Gamecube Iso Extractor.

Yes it use mini dvd-r which are 1.5GBs. like MystD said, the PC cant read gamecube discs, but you could use the PSO method to back up your games. Its currently not possible to burn a game onto a mini dvd-r and be able to play it on your gamecube.
