DVD Writer advice please

I've just fitted a new DVD Writer - Pioneer dvr 106.

Windows recognised Drive OK

The drive drive will read, but not write (DVD or CD-r's)

System:
Windows ME
Nero 5
Duron 700
256Mb
Creative CDrom

any known issues ?

ps Have tried a different DVD writer (MSI), same problem.

Yes.

with the Creative cd-rom as slave, and the HDD on the other ide.

Have you tried anything besides Nero? Might want to get another prog to try out.
