I have installed a Magic 3 modchip and so far I have about 50 coasters laying around, none of which work. Im starting to really get the idea that the whole modchip thing is a scam. I have tried just about everything I can use to make backups of the games, I have tried different cdr media, I have adjusted the laser bla bla bla. nothing works, i just get a rediculous thing on the screen that says "please insert a PLaystation or Playstation 2 format cd"
or the screen locks up at the playstation screen when it does make an attempt to boot. Im just ready to toss it in the trash and buy an Xbox.
Anyone have any ideas?

Awww, thats too bad.
Tyler!
1. Magic 3 is a piece of sh:t.
2. What version ps2 do you have?
3. What media are you using?
4. Have you tried using RecordNow Max 4.50 to burn?
It sad to hear u havin problems but moddin ps2 ain't no scam. It just takes one fing not to be quite right an it all goes t1ts up.
Rather than burning loads of coasters just pick one game and work on it until that boots up fine and go from there. U did mention that u were using cdr's so I assume u are tryin to back up a cd based ps2 game.
CloneCD or CDRWin should be able to do this fine or RecordNowDX for that matter. Never copy disc to disc. Always put in original and make an image then burn back afterwards. Never burn a ps2 cdr faster than about 4X. Always use a top quality media like Verbatim Datalife Plus CDR.
Hope this gives u something to try......Regards
You're an a***! To say that the modchip scene is a scam, how come mine and everyone elses PS2's and chips work? If you've got a problem, ask a question instead of coming on here shouting stuff you know nothing about.
If you want to go and buy a KakboX, then go ahead, but you'll be dissapointed - the PS2 ain't the most popular console for nothing mate...
The Magic 3.x is a naff chip. I'm not suprised you're having trouble with it. toss it and get a decent chip in there.
XboX, ha, you make me laugh... It's about Bill Gates was beaten at something, and it seems that Sony have done just about that! :D

Well I appreciate all the input, (except one person) and I'll give some a try. Im going to try verbatim disks and see how that goes. so doing a disk to disk is a bad idea. As far as the mod goes, this is the first time I ever tried a mod on anything, but I know it is in right, I work for a company that does computer repair, we do component level board repair with a microscope so I dont think its in wrong, I just think the chip sux and I havent been to pleased with the PS2, to many laser problems. I'll keep working at it. Im using alcohol 120% anygood?
Thankx

Maybe you mis-installed the modchip.

It was a venting post, it wasnt directed at any of you.
No I dont believe the chip was istalled incorrectly, we have checked it twice, we do this type of work everyday, but the chip its self may either be just a crappy chip, a fake or defective. Also I have been having some problems with the laser, I think I may have it adjusted now.
The version of the PS2 is 4 no gap
By the way, how do you turn off Auto insert in Recordnow max 4.5
Thanks
Turning off auto insert isn't necessary even though the tutorial mentions it. v4 ps2s have crappy lasers. You might need to clean it or replace it if that doesn't work.

Yea, I have heard that about the lasers in this model, I have it now where it will play most PS2 original games but I may have to replace it later on.
Thanx

About your venting, just take it into consideration that people may not like what you have to say. So when you vent you may get results your not looking for.
Have you tried playing originals? Im wondering if it will play anything at all at this point in time.

try the recommended DUO chip. only 17 wires and great reviews.
You say it will play most originals. Time for a new laser or ps2 all together. You need a stronger laser to play backups than originals.

Also are you trying ps1 or ps2 backups? You may want to try a dvd movie backup to see if your laser will see any type of dvdr.
Since a backup dvd movie will play without the use of a modchip, youll soon find out if your laser can indeed read dvdr.

ok, well I have it playing some backups now, I may need to bring the laser voltage up a bit more.
Now, if a game like socom-II which is a DVD, does that image have to be burned on a DVD also or if its a rip can it be burned on a CDR and if its has to be a DVD should that be -R or +R?
I know these are alot of questions, but like I said, I new to the Mod thing, actualy the whole console thing in general.
Thanx
No Socom II ripkit yet to allow to burn to cdr. You will want to use dvd-r.

If you are having to "tweak" the laser for it to read DVD-r media then the laser is weak and on its way out. Lasers in the v4 were not to good to start with.

I know I got into this thread late but it for sure sound like another crappy V4 laser issue to me. I have had many many situations like this and the V4. Also what Tyler said about making a DVD-R movie back up to see if your laser will even read DVD-r's is true, however this doesn't mean that a PS2 dvd game will boot. This is a good way to check, when booting a PS2 original silver game(dvd based) does your ps2 go to the browser screen first before finally booting? If so then you for sure have a tired laser and this can throw off the timing of the mod chip resulting in the RSOD screen (the please insert a PS2 blah blah screen). Also it doesn't sound like you have tried any DVD-r back ups and you did mention rip's, the magic 3.1 is known to have trouble with some rips. My final recommendation would be to sell your V4 on like ebay or something and buy a new PS2 with a good laser because if you buy a laser for your V4 your looking at spending $40-$50 for it and it wont be one of the newer model lasers that they put in the V5 and latter machines which work much better. Even if you do install a new laser like I said and get it to work good you will have to install an older model even if its brand new just to have it do the same thing to you down the road once again. OK I think I have said enough hope this helps.
Read my Sig..It explains techniques..If it helps any..
it must be summet u doing wrong, mine works no prob,i got 2 and then new one i got has a dms chip init works fine i use rytec dvd's good quall if i use dif ones it skips sum time but if i use rytec no probs at all so do it right u will be OK have fun all
I to put a magic v chip in my ps2 and the chip was bad not to mention the poor service I got from http://www.modchip.ca/index.php. Do your self a favor. Buy the DUO chip for $19.95 Us. Shipping included (www.modchips.cc) All those disks you think are coasters. Save them, They are probably good. (Magic V chips are ) “CRAP”

I can defiantly say you are wrong in that statement. I'm no fan boy but the Magic V chips are very good and the Magic Team in my eyes has finally put out an A-1 chip. Of course you will get the dud chip every now and then, which is what may have happened to you but to lump the Magic V chip into the category of "crappy" just because you had bad luck with one chip is just wrong. Anyway I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Magic3 did have heat issues...
but this sounds more like an installer error or just a worn laser issue...
never crap on a chip until you are 100% sure it was to blame.
Always take into account that PS2's are the cheapest made consoles you can buy - starting foremost with their cheaply made lasers...
