DC boot up disc + burning back ups

I have several questions, but I would like to start with how do I use this new boot up disc I have (the one with the utopia screen). I have burned two back ups, I tried to us them with no success. Also I am an avid video game collector and player with two younger sons up and coming. I would like to know what patchs and ISO's are? Please forgive my ignorance on these issues, I would just like to get in the game circle with everyone else!
