An odd problem I have had lately trying to play movies on my computer lately.
I had a copy of SOME NEW MOVIE IN SVCD FORMAT (An image file) and tried to play it, and upon trying to do so in PowerDVD, I'd get sound, but the picture would be...screwed up. Just a blocky yellow, pink, and green screen, flashing a bit with sound, and then completely freezing my computer and causing me to need to restart. I burned it to a CD and, to no surprise, it didn't work. Thought it may have just been that movie, which was no big deal - I could go see it for free anytime I wanted.
I tried to play an actual DVD I had, though, on it - and the SAME THING HAPPENED. Specifically, I tried to play that extra CD that came with the Two Towers extended edition gift set - "Creating Gollum". Bummer. Tried to play The Royal Tenenbaums DVD, and it did the same thing!
None of them play in Media Player, either, to no great surprise. But all I get there is an error message, instead of freezing.

Might my DVD drive be broken? I can still play games off of it and stuff. I wouldn't assume so.
Might certain codecs screw this up? Aside from what is downloaded automatically, I only have the latest versions of DivX and XviD installed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try uninstalling PowerDVD or whatever dvd playing program you currently have installed in your PC. Then reinstall it. Sometimes youll get a small glitch that will screw with you. See as you can still play your games with your drive, that means it still works so at least its not broken.
