View Full Version : adding files to images. can it be done?
can I somehow add a file or folder into an already made clonecd image?
I recently bought Red Alert 2 which had the safedisk v2 protection but also with read errors on it. so I did manage to do a clonecd image of the game and also made the fix.exe with unsafedisk.
Now all I want is to somehow add the fixed exe into the backup cd.
I cannot coppy the files of the cd to a temp folder because it contains read errors. first of all thank you for reading my question, problem, and again thank you if you know what can i do. I was hoping there was any software that would allow me to add files to the clonecd image.

Ur problem can be fixed with cdMage.......it can handle a lot of images and cloneCD ones are included!
Good luck!
TIP: Don't know if u must replace the fixed exe into the .cab installation files!just try with ur idea and if it works great!
WinISO also will allow you to add/extract/modify a clonecd image file.

I thank you both for replying to me, I'm sure you both are correct.
I'll check out what you've told me and possibly write back to thank you once again. I checked winiso's website and I think this is what I've been looking for, too bad it's not freeware! Maybe the other program is, I'll check that one too.

Yes themis I am from Greece!!
I got hold of both programs cdmage and winiso, and this is what i have found out. Cdmage (freeware!!) is a very good program but you can't add any files or folders into the image that you have. It only checks it for errors and repaires them. It did find the read errors on the image of the game and I was able to remove them(which is something of no importance, since the game would still work).
Now winiso does support adding files and folders to an already made image. Now what is the problem? The problem is that it cannot save the changes to the same type of image that you had, only on iso format. It has an option save which, bad for me, I pressed it and my clone cd image didn't work anymore because clone said that the sub file didn't match with the img file!!! When I tried to convert the clone image to iso (yes i did it again, the image) it didn't make it because of the read errors I quess. So what you must do is, maybe the following: remove the read errors with cdmage, add the files or folders with iso, and convert it to iso(that the only thing you can do anyway, with winiso). I didn't do this yet though, because my winiso program wasn't working 100% (I have to test it before I buy it :) if you know what i mean ). OUFF that's all for now. If you have another idea PLEASE write it.(perhaps another program? )
Heres what you do:
use your backed up disk and copy contents to a temp folder, then add your fixed .exe to the temp folder named crack then copy back to a cd

To exalos..........cdMage can handle files and folders without problems.....be sure to obtain the last version (still beta but running) of cdMage and u will be able to insert files into the image structure...
(version 1.02.2)
Good luck!
I downloaded CDmage the last version(beta) witch supports adding files into an image, but I found the way to complicated. it asks u how many sectors you want to add and then it allows you to import a file, which is a little bit comfusing. And another thing is that
you can save the new image(with the imported file) only as "CDRWin and fiireburner cuesheet file(*.cue)".
However I did manage to add the file I wanted to a cd together with the game.I tried extracting the files with CDmage to a temp folder. CDmage had no problem at all (the image had read errors, as the original) so I extracted the files to a temp folder, added the crack, and burned a new cd with the same label as the original.
It was so simple after all, with CDmage ofcourse!
From what I understood:
1.adding an extra file to an image isn't as easy as extracting the whole cd to a temp folder and so on...
2.Adding a file into an image can be done with these programs but then you have to convert your image to another type like ".iso" for example.
I don't know if you agree with me, but that's what i think.
Thank all for writing. You realy did help me.

To handle cloneCd images you don't need to save the new image...just insert the file you want to crack and it's done..U don't need to save it as .iso file.....at least for cloneCD images.u can close the program after changing files without saving anything..then burn with the original image program and it's done!

Sorry for double-post
TIP: when u have a cd such aztecas, delta force land warrior or something like ...with functional dummies inside u cannot copy the cd at your hard disk even if u extract with cdMage or WinISo...then replacing files with this method is quite simple and useful!
Good luck!
Aahhh....!!
This is more like the kind of threads we're after here!
Useful posts with thought out answers.
What a refreshing change.
Well done one and all.
Morgloum007, when I add the file, allright? (file imported succesfully). You say that afterthat if I close the program (CDmage or winiso) without saving or doing anything else the file will still be in the image?? how come when I reopen the image, that I've imported the file, it doesn't show it to me??
So you are saying that eventhough it isn't shown to me, if I burn that image, my imported file will be on the cd??
Sorry for asking before even trying out what you've said. It is a little bit strange though. thanks.
(i''ll try it on a rewrittable soon) ;)

Yeap...it's correct...the file you imported will be still there but you can not see it if you reopen the image file because the size of the file must be the same at the original.....CDMage will insert your file if it's minor in size than original, padding with zeros the space that could be empty by the change's result. You will see it after burning..if you don't believe...just use a cd-rw!....
Good luck!

Themis you are more worried than I am. :)

thanx, now i will try to do it with my black and white cd!!!
Sweeeeet!
I was just going to post this very question. Nice input fellas. Thnx.
I burned the image after importing a file into a rewritable but without the expected results. :( Themis did you try it with black & white??
maybe morglum you should tell us step by step how you do it everytime. I don't know what I am doing wrong. 1.import sectors
2 import file 3 close Cdmage 4 burn image.
that's what I am doing. I know I've become a pain in the but for some people but .... I am no newbie but I still haven't managed to do this. ( I've worked also at a computer store !!).
Many people are reading this topic and want to know!!!

Ok..let's see.first i must say that i only use CDMage when dummies files are contained into the cd..otherwise i use the traditional method. In this case..if i well remember..the problem becomes when you replace the main executable file....u try it and burn.......this is not the right way........To obtain a "cuasi-perfect" copy u must replace the executable file INTO the installation .cab files from installshield too.Since more than two years i've been using the programs like ixcomp because installshield now checks if the file installed is the original one. With new safedisc v2 this check was override but now it begins again. For today games we need the i6comp program to replace the "indexed" executable into the non-standart cabinet files (downloadable from gamecopyword,protools....etc)This is the method to follow with any game suspicios to have an executable registry into the cabinet files:
1.- download i6comp102.zip (this file contains a .exe, another .dll and more junk to be wasted)
2.-install i6comp.exe into your command folder (windows 9x,me and don't remember if xp,200o has this folder.....if not..install into the system32 folder)and whatever.dll into your system folder for windows 9x,me and system32 dor xp,2000
3.- use blindread 2.03 or windows explorer and create a temporally folder in which cd would be entired copied.
4.- search the installshield cabinet files in your temporally folder : data1.cab, data1.hdr and data2.cab (this is always the same!!!!!)
5.- remember in what directory are this files and open a DOS window (command.com for windows 9x,me and cmd.exe for xp,2000)
6.- go to that folder in DOS (cd <folder>...and so on)
7.- now we are going to search the protected executable file into the installation. To accomplish this type "i6comp l data1.cab *.exe"
8.- a list of the files into the cabinet files will appear and pay attention to the number that preceed the file. This number is the index of that file and must be remembered.
8.- do not close the DOS window and go to your temporally folder
9.- select the main installshield files and tick it not to be "read only" file
10.- copy a working cracked executable file in this folder
11.- go to your DOS window and type "i6comp r data1.cab <index>" to remove the original file from installation.
Example:
C:\Imagen\TYPHOON>i6comp l data1.cab *.exe
InstallShield 6.x Cabinet Util
Version 0.2 -] fOSSiL & Morlac - 2000 [-
Date Time OrigSize Attr CompSize Ind FileName
========== ===== ========== ==== ========== ==== =================
07-12-1999 12:45 0 A___ 0 7 iKernel.exe
07-31-2000 13:39 520192 A___ 269159 44 config3dr2000.exe
---------- ---------- -------------------
520192 269159 2 file(s) total
C:\Imagen\TYPHOON>i6comp r data1.cab 44
and in a few seconds all will be done!!!!!!!
12.- close your DOS window and tick again the "read only" attributes for those three files we have been working with.
13.- delete the cracked executable we inserted in the temporally folder
14.- burn with same label as original
15.- enjoy the game
TIP: this method cost to me to be learned a lot and now i explain it here in detail. With this method you will be able to do a "cuasi" 1 to 1 backup copy.....game will be installed and played as original without removing or replacing after installation.this method works for almost today games excepting the wise installers...(i am in it )and it's very usuful for those who want a well-finished copy of its game.
This method fixes the problem of burned cds that should work and doesn't.
The excepts to this method and i am in it again is the harry potter game because main executable registry is into the install cabs but do not phisicaly appears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any suggestion accpted
Good luck!!!!!!!
