Hi all,

I have just gotten a magic 3 universal chip installed in my PS2...and one of the first things I did was stick in my copy of FF Tactics and Tekken 3 to see if it played NTSC PS1 games.

I was dissapointed to see that a big black border was on the bottom of the screen and the picture was very squashed.

Does anyone know if this can be fixed...so the games can be played full screen at full speed.

Also is this going to happen with any PS2 games that I get in the future? (I dont have any as of yet...this is my main concern).

Thanks

Chade

We don't know what PS2 you got; what TV you got; PAL or NTSC; what video lead you are using; details please.

I have PS2 Version 5.

I have a Sony 61 cm PAL TV that can display 50-60Hz.

Using the standard AV cables (red, white, yellow) that we get over here in Australia.

Well I tried one of my PS2s with Magic 3 on the multi-system TV we have and there was no border of any sort with US PS1 games.

There is a bug in the pre-v7 PS2 that causes the wrong signal to be put out for NTSC PS1 games and it may also be that your TV only recognises NTSC on one of its AV ports.

As for full speed, there is no game play speed difference between NTSC and PAL.

Hmmm well this concerns me a little because if you have a Magic 3U installed and your US PS1 games run full screen that does not bode well for me.

Does the bug that you mention also effect PS2 games?

Also concerning the PS1 games it's not only the border thats the problem...the picture itself is actually pushed into the top left hand corner of the screen.

Thanks charlie

That looks more and more like a TV problem to me. The circuitry doesn't handle the NTSC mode properly. An NTSC-PAL convertor from Maplins wold take care of that, I believe.

The bug is with NTSC PS1 games whereby the PS2 (pre-v7) doesn't set the correct video mode which shoud be NTSC; it sets Pseudo PAL and this can throuw things.

It seems to me that the problem lies with this bug that you spoke of in pre V7 PS2's. Because all of my NTSC PS1 games run full screen on my chipped PSX...just not when I play them in the Magic 3U chipped PS2.

I guess the only thing I can do is just wait and see what my NTSC PS2 games will run like....I should be getting my hands on some games soon.

I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the help charlie.
