My daughter has a PS1 without a mod chip. (I am about to have it fitted).

I want to back up her games so they don't get trashed by her or her younger brother (8yo and 3yo).

I have a Sony burner and CloneCD 4.x.x.x and Nero 5.x.x.x as well (or I did have until my hard disk was accidently reformatted this morning - not happy).

Speaking to a friend, he suggested I need some front end software for CloneCD which will preset all the required settings to allow for the games to be copied correctly.

Is this correct or can I just use CloneCD by itself. I looked at the tutorials but it had no information for v4 of CloneCD.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have downloaded the CloneCD database. Is this required? I have looked through both GameCopyWorld and MegaGames but the information seems to be conflicting.

Thx in advance

DL Cloney XXL, use it to scan your game and then send settings to Clone cd.When you send the settings Clone cd will start up, then just pick your reader then game. When reading is done, pick to burn, pick burner and then game, should have good copy.
You must have 100% compatable burner for clone cd to work, check thier web site.Good luck

OK, so which is the correct answer!!!! I have downloaded Clony XXL. (I am still rebuilding my PC at the moment).

Do I need the CloneCD front end or not? Is it easier to use the CloneCD database?

One of the apps I installed last night corrupted my OS which is why I am rebuilding my PC today. I don't want to run or install anything I don't really need.

there is a sticky on the psx forum that will tell you what settings to use.

This link has the tutorial, thanks psx paul.

It only has the settings for v3 so I hope the v4 settings are the same.

OK everyone. I finally have finished rebuilding my PC (a real bummer about that reformat command on the floppy disk I inserted) and it looks as if I have managed to burn a couple of CD's. I'm not sure if they are correct yet as I haven't had the mod chip put in. My daughter is seeing her best friend today who does have the chip so I will get them to check my backups.

I would like to say a big thankyou to all those who offered advice and assistance.

CloneCD works flawlessly for me on everything for PSX and PS2--CDRWIN was so-so, and a pain in the but to use in trial version. If you follow the guide's settings, CloneCD will work (apply anti-mod hacks when appropriate, etc). As for the Lybcript detection--it defaults to these settings if no encryption scheme is found. The reason is, these settings will copy ALL READABLE DATA and BURN IT UNCORRECTED. This is important because it insures that whatever protection scheme that may exist and was not detected will be copied as well.

The most important thing is to make sure you have at least version 4.60 ASPI Layer installed (c:\windows\system\winaspi.dll in win98SE will clue you in), and your hardware is 100% compatible with CloneCD. A database is available on the website, or you can just look in the right-hand pain of cloneCD and make sure your drive(s) can handle sub-channel, DAO,...etc.

I know the guides were set up for v3.xx, but most of the settings are still there in v4.xx (a handful are activated by default based on your systems region settings, and cannot be changed). To access them, right click the profile in the reading and writing pages and you can move through the tabbed interface to set everything up. You can save your custom profiles. I duped the GameCD profile, made changes, then saved it as PSXGame and it works for me.

Good Luck!

I didn't know about the winaspi.dll version. I will check it out and upgrade it if necessary.

Clone CD seems to be working OK for me. I have only had a problem on 1 disk which kept crashing while reading at the same sector at lowering read speeds. I guess it is just a bad spot on the disk. The original plays OK though.

I don't know anything about anti-mod patches. I guess I will have to do some more reading. So far, none of the CD's I have burnt have caused a problem, except for the Harry Potter disk I was given which didn't work at all (see my other thread). I was going to try using bootedit to fix the problem with the image but I didn't get time over the weekend. I will have a go one night this week.

Thanks for the tip on the ASPI version.
